UP Before the snow gets deep

I plan to scout out along Grand Marais truck trail and Deer Park road.

You might check with Woodland Park in Grand Marais (east of Munising 30-40 miles I think). We've camped there in the summer. It's a municipal campground and on a bluff over Lake Superior. Go to Seney on then north on M-77 to Grand Marais. The campground in just through town & left. You can walk to downtown. Not sure that water will be hooked up that late in the season. They don't reservations, first come. Plenty of sites.

Access may be a problem for larger RVs for many boondocking sites in the UP. However, I know that dry camping occurs throughout the National, State and County forests until the end of regular deer hunting season at the end of November. Other special hunts go on until the first of the new year. Not all of these hunters have cabins. I know families who have had permission to camp on commercial forest land for generations.

It was in the early 2001 or 2 but we found that many campgrounds were closed right
after Labor Day

And it snowed one August when we were there. Not enough to stop us from tent camping but that was over 50 years ago.

Many, MANY years ago I camped somewhere between Munising and Christmas. It was the middle of July, but there was a north wind blowing across the lake. I swear it got down into the 40s that night !

Years ago we camped at several Michigan State Forest campgrounds along Lake Superior. I can't really remember which ones though. Good luck, my winter camping days are way behind me. Sold my Snowtrekker tent, tobaggan and titanium stove many years ago.
