Virginia coast in January

Christmas is over. The Bears lost. Thinking of heading for Vir./N.C. coast for the rest of the winter. Is everything already full? Is it too cold if we don't go to the gulf coast? We don't know the area, so any suggestions are really appreciated.
Thanks

You will find the Gulf Coast a little bit warmer. In fact you could end up with some reasonably warm weather. The distance is the same from Chicago. We were at VA Beach last week and they were talking snow this coming week.

From Chicago
VA Beach 900 miles 15 hours
Gulf Shores 936 miles 15 hours

Coming from Chicago area VA will seem warm. I agree MB is a better destination but VA is doable if you're from a truly cold place. VA is moderately cold at tyhe worst.

Yea, much warmer than Illinois, but not very warm at all. The Gulf coast is your friend in January-February. We usually hit Savannah, GA or Charleston, SC on our way to/from Florida. Its nice during the day (50's to 60's) but gets chilly at night.

I live about 30 miles from MB SC in NC ( North of MB ). We don't get a lot of really cold weather here but not unusual for lows below freezing in Jan / Feb. Lowest temp so far this Winter has been around 28-30f, but we are right on the barrier island. Move inland 30 miles or so and freezing temps are pretty common. I have a renter from Cleveland area and he says it never gets cold here, so it it all relative!

As someone suggested, look at the stats. We were 70f a week or so ( actually about 70 yesterday but raining ) Bottom line is it does get cold ( by our standards ๐Ÿ™‚ ) but not very cold. It does not last long either. Cold one week, warm the next. Just looked our 10 day forecast lows range from 25-50f and highs from 46-62f. That is for Wilmington, it would be a few degrees warmer on the beaches, and in MB.

There are some people who winter here, more so in MB, a little further south. We bought our TT last Feb and took it to MB for a couple days shake down cruise. More people wintering there than I expected.

We rarely get snow anymore here, although we did have a trace in Nov this year, which is very unusual. I have seen 12-14inches of snow here on the beach, but that was 25 years ago and very very unusual.

I usually try to leave for a while in Jan / Feb cause I can and it's just boring sitting inside so much. My daughter and family are in Jax Fl and it is quite a bit warmer there (400miles south of here) than here. To get what I would call consistent warm weather in Winter go to mid Fl or below.

Ditto.

I fully agree, we were in Virginia last winter for 6 nights and it wasn't 'summer' type weather by any means. We spend our winter in Myrtle Beach and even there it quite cold but at least it's sunny most of the time. Last winter temperatures varied between lows of 40's and highs of 70 but for the most part it was in the low 60's.

We live halfway down the NC coast and have been leaving every winter since we got the RV to head south. Some years can be pleasant but it's not unusual to have many days below freezing in January and February.

Check Weatherbase. Its a free site that will give you all kinds of summarized weather statistics, by city within state, by month over several years. High and low temperature averages, maximum, and minimum, rain and snow, etc. No guarantees, but at least you'll know what to prepare for.
I've found that coastal areas, at close to sea level, tend to be more moderate than the middle of the country and the high plains out west.
Retired and visiting as much of this beautiful country as I can.
