A mysterious illness has sickened more than 200 people in Washington state who reported becoming ill after swimming at Horseshoe Lake near Mount Saint Helens, KOMO News reported.

This is the Horseshoe lake county park in southern Kitsap county and yes the beach was closed there and will probably so till after this coming weekend. It is thought that it is a norovirus and the Kitsap county health department has taken numerous samples and sent them to the CDC. The CDC can actually take the virus and compare it to all the stool samples that have been submitted by those folks that have gotten sick and find where it came from. It is suspected that some momma let her child go into the water with a load in its diapers. None of the other parts of the lake were affected and the level is now back to normal.
It is possible that the beach will be reopening after the weekend. We have over 1500 visitors to that park on any summer weekend. As a member of the county park advisory board,I'm very proud of our local county parks. Check out our Kitsap County website and see what we have to offer and come see us.
We've got lot's of really great kraft breweries also.
Thanks much for the courteous update, Bigdog. I'm glad to see they have a handle on it.

  • There are LOTs of "Horseshoe Lakes".
It's the one near Port Orchard, ie WHERE I LIVE, I've gone swimming in that lake, at the County Park were people (probably) all got ill.
How do you think I know, and NO KOMO is -not- reporting "near" Mt St Helens, I just watched the news LIVE

Good question: since KOMO news was the source of the story, perhaps they can clarify.
  • OK, there are 2 Horseshoe lakes, 1 between Mt St Helens and Mt Adams. I've not been to there in years, but this one was very polluted and campground infested by bugs.

    Which lake made the news?

Not your fault that the news article is SOOO wrong (Fox, sigh, again)
AP, Reuters, CNN and MSNBC were wrong too if using your parameters.

News sources are feeds for an entire news planet so let's avoid casting aspersions on any particular news source. For the rest of the world, this lake is near MSH.

The lake is "close" to Mt Saint Helens if you live in say New York. Actually the lake is like 3-1/2 hours of driving west and north of the mountain.

The lake is actually close to Port Orchard

The lake has also been closed since the weekend, due to the problem, and will likely remain closed until fall.
