Wash DC area?

Kids are stationed at Fort Belvoir which is right by DC. The closet campground would be Pohick Bay Campground in Lorton Va anybody been there can you get a long trailer 36ft in and around the reviews in woodalls was not great. Only nice campground we found researching was the KOA in Fredericksburg which will be a hr trip every day to the kids place on base. Going for two weeks any help appreciated
  • If you can't get a space at Ft. Belvoir I'd recommend Pohick Bay. We used it many times when we lived in VA for up to a week each time. Nothing fancy but okay.
  • Your kids can sponsor you onto the base so you can stay at the military campground. You do have to follow the rules for firearms, etc. This usually requires a letter from the military member's Commanding Officer to Outdoor Recreation/MWR. As long as there have space, there should be no problem.

There is the cherry hill koa as well but that might be even further. KOA looked a bit more crowded than I liked but is closer to DC and has a bus stop there for trips to/from DC.

I'm pretty sure there's no KOA affiliation at the Cherry Hill RV Park in College Park, MD.

It's a great choice for DC and I will stay there again, but since it's on the Maryland side of DC, maybe not best location for the OP.
  • Ft Belvoir has a very nice and new campground right down by the river. Quiet, in a wooded area and concrete pads. Would not hesitate to stay there.
  • Cherry Hill in College Park Md is the commonly recommended CG. We stayed there a couple of years ago. But one of the prime attractions of that park is that is has a shuttle bus that runs non-stop to the metro train station (green line) to downtown DC. You do not want to drive in DC. The CG is very large and quite nice otherwise.
  • We are going to pohick bay this year. Looks like a nice place. There is the cherry hill koa as well but that might be even further. KOA looked a bit more crowded than I liked but is closer to DC and has a bus stop there for trips to/from DC.
  • Pohick Bay is fine. I was able to get around with my 40' fiver without issue.
Prince William Forest is also decent I have been to both and would return to both.
I would choose the one that is closer. I believe Pohick Bay is about 10 miles closer
  • Prince William Forest Park has an RV park with pull thru sites and full hookups. Not a resort but not bad at all. The pool feels good on a hot day. We stayed there two years ago. Close to the interstate.
  • You might have your kids check to see if they can get you into the rv park at Ft. Belvoir (http://belvoir.armymwr.com/us/belvoir/programs/recreational-lodging-travel-camp).

That would be my first choice if they can arrange it! Good luck.
  • I was only at Pohick Bay 1 night a few years ago on a shakedown trip after I bought the Roadtrek (which doesn't have the same problems a 36 foot trailer would have) but there were bigger rigs there. It's a nice park and very convenient to Fort Belvoir. I'd call the park office and talk to them - there might be some sites to avoid, but I think most would be OK.
