It is absolutely amazing that the best state park swimming hole in the entire state of Texas is way out west - at Balmorhea.
Even the best place for scuba diving training.
Summer time - reservations are essential.
If you can't get in - Saddleback is ok. If you want more than a day - Davis Mountains SP is about 35 miles south and a good place to stop. At 5,000 ft elevation - it's not near as hot as places like Fort Stockton where you can fry eggs on your TV hood at 7 am.Major Dad wrote:
During the summer on weekends, half of West Texas is there cooling off in the pool!
I never knew there were that many people in West Texas. The park does implement a crowd control measure - where cars have to line up outside. When one car leaves, another is allowed in.
I've seen overflow parking on Sunday afternoon along the drive and past the parking lot in the grass. The rangers do a great job keeping it all organized. Since we had reservations, we went past all that and set up camp, then went to the pool when the daytrippers began leaving.
