What Is the California Delta?

When asking for advice on how to visit San Francisco several people suggested staying in the Delta area. Could you please explain what this is and where it is located? Many thanks for your usual help.
  • Sacremento-San Joaquin River Delta. Google is indeed very informative. Depends on why you are going and if you are doing it in an RV. Staying in town is the best way as commutes into town take time. Do you want to see NAPA? Then stay between there and town. We like it south of San Jose/ Monterey Peninsula so stay around San Jose.

  • The delta is within Contra Costa, Solano, Yolo, San Joaquin and Sacramento counties.

Look at the area between Lodi, Stockton, Manteca, Antioch and Sacramento. Rio Vista is popular.

  • The Delta is an agricultural area east of San Francisco and south/west of Sacramento. There are many lovely parks all along the many rivers and inlets which make up the Delta region. San Francisco is a good hour away by care, at least, with traffic I would almost plan on a 2 hour drive to the tourist areas. Because there really are no straight shot roads to Sacramento it too is about an hours drive. For an extended stay it is a lovely area, but remember, winters can be wet (by California standards) in that region, and an El Nino is predicted for this winter. If you are just planning to vacation and visit the Bay area there are many closer regions that would make the visit more convenient. Petaluma KOA or Pasifica RV are both lovely parks. Near Napa we like Vineyard RV in Vacaville.
    Happy Trails.
  • I lived in the Delta area. It is a poor place to stay and visit San Francisco. Traffic could be brutal and your 1 or 2 hrs from the city. San Francisco RV resort, KOA in Petaluma, Alameda County fairgrounds in Plesanton are the first Parks that come to mind.

X2, For me it is a great area and the fishing used to be better before the water started going south. There are a lot of things to do if you don't mind doing day trips. JMO
