What up with Mission/Brownsville Tx. RV parks

I've noticed a very large volume of Park Model sales down there. Is there a panic going on? Is the crime rate getting out of hand? People are nearly giving their units away. Anyone winter down there that could shed some light on the area? I'd like to try that area out for our winter retreat and perhaps take advantage of sane healthcare costs across the border.
  • Thanks. Was just curious. There are some fantastic buys down there and lots of them to choose from. I think I'll take the plunge and find something with a Texas room. I've got a center console bay boat, so near the bay would be ideal. I think I'd like this area better than the Corpus Christi metroplex, we returned here the last couple of years and it's getting expensive and fills quickly. I recall when we started fulltiming there were a lot of widows and widowers selling their motor homes/fivers and going with these park models. Any suggestions for shopping the area for a home base?

Ideally, we'd like a summer park model somewhere cooler, maybe Arkansas and one winter, maybe in Brownsville area or South Padre. Just getting a bit road weary and we've seen the highlights out there so far. But I'm sure we've missed a few.
  • No different then any other snowbird area, folks get old and either pass away or want to move back near the kids.
  • We are in one of the Martin Ranches on the west end of Mission. We have quite a bit for sale in our park. We do own our lots. I have to say, however, that I don't think anyone in this park is selling because they are afraid of anything. This park was new about 30 years ago and many of the same people who bought in then are still here, my parents included. A lot of units for sale are ones where the owner has died. And there seems to be a lot of that. There usually is a flurry of buying activity here in the spring and that is going on right now. Prices in our park have always been reasonable. A place just across the street sold and is being renovated. The owners have been absent for several years. It is a park model on 1 1/2 lots with mostly concrete and a large awning and an outbuilding. Because it had set empty, it was a bit of a mess on the inside, but the new owner is happy as he paid about the price of a lot for it. He is a retired builder, so it will look great when he is done.

We feel very safe here. We have about 7 parks interconnected by cart paths, so you can walk extensively and ride your bikes without getting outside of the gates.

We do have a lot for sale, but people seem to be buying as well. We were actually asked about our place. We have 2 lots with a large canopy over 1 1/2 of it under which our motorhome sits. Then we have a Texas room (efficiency apartment) and a cart shed. Not ready to sell though.
