Where to camp Asheville area

DH and I planning a week in the Asheville area in mid-June. Anywhere from Maggie Valley region to Black Mt/Hendersonville areas. Not necessarily in Asheville area itself. Need FHU and would like to have campfires!! We are also Passport America members and that kind of discount would be nice to have!!! Please share both positive and negative, personal experiences from the past 6 months or so. Checked with rv park reviews (which I always do) but would appreciate YOUR experiences as well. Have a 34' MH with toad. Thanks.
  • I am pretty sure Creekwood RV Park is a Passport America park. http://www.creekwoodfarmrv.com/
  • There are several campgrounds in Maggie but the sites are very close to each other. There are several on the outskirts of Maggie, Creekwood and Pride RV Resort that are nice but they are all very close to us so for a quick weekend or little getaway we always stayed at Rutledge Lake RV Park in Fletcher (Asheville area). It's very easy to get to, most of the sites are easy to back in to, the pool, bathhouse and washing machines are always clean and nice and it's a really nice place to go.
  • Mama Gerties is outstanding. Campfire Lodgings would be my other choice.
  • Near Hendersonville. You can try Orchard Lake. It is just out of Saluda. A beautiful CG, with a lake, canoes, fishing, game room, and in the field HUGE sites, In the woods smaller sites but cooler.
  • Creekwood Farm RV is Passport America except for part of the summer, in the Waynesville/Maggie Valley area. We stay there even when discount not available. Worth it for site right by the creek.

Very nice atmosphere, convenient to Great Smoky Mtn NP, restaurants, shops, but peaceful.

They have portable fire pits available for small rental fee.

We stayed there last August and returned in October.
  • Momma Gerties has been our choice, and we've tried a few including the KOA
  • We like Asheville East KOA in Swannanoa. Some sites on the creek. Some road and train noise but didn't bother us.
Mama Gerties is on a mountain and not walker friendly. Beautiful park however. Restrooms are at the bottom of the mountain.
  • If you do not have RVParky you need to get it. It is so informative on campgrounds, state parks and all camping areas in the us.
We are at Yogi Bear park in cherokee now til Wed. April 2, then we are going to Pride resort in Waynesville. I think they take Passport and other forms of discount. We are going on Coast 2 coast. First time at both campgrounds so I can't give a review on Pride, but I don't think we will return to Yogi Bear park unless we bring the grands.
Don't forget RVParky. I have it on my phone and laptop. It is a free app.
