Winter in South Texas?

We stayed in Rockport at an RV park call " Lagoons ", I believe. Very nice area...only problem was the lack of good golf in the immediate area. We now stay in the Mission, Tx area. Generally warmer than CC area. If it were only GREAT areas to stay, without a doubt, Kerrville,Fredricksburg Tx would be our choice; however, TOO cold and GREAT friends in Mission ---Green Gate Grove Park.

In 2010 we were still undecided on where we would winter upon full retirement. Had visited SW Florida almost every winter for short vacation for about 30 years.

Decided to give South Padre Island a try. Reserved a condo for 5 weeks, loaded up the Harley, and arrived in February. Had the bike out of the trailer 3 or 4 times, experienced an ice storm that closed down the area for a couple days, and never wore shorts.

We loved crossing over into Mexico. The prices were much better and lower traffic down there in that part of Texas. Just not enough heat for our winter stays. Been going back to SW Florida every since.

rkassl, can't offer suggestion but interested in what you find. If you Google Port Aransas RV resorts you'll be able to read a number of reviews. We're looking there to be midway between family in Houston & friends in Austin.

Again you need to be careful since we all enjoy different things when it comes to parks. For us we are using the park as our home and exploring the area around us. So for us we need FHU/cable TV/swimming pool/Internet and a nice clean park ran by owners that want to keep it like that all at a reasonable cost. Once we found the area we like to spend more time in then a whole new set of requirements come into play for us.

So here is our parks given a month at a time:

Galveston - Jamaica Beach RV Park

CC - Drifters RV Resort (actually in Rockport)

Victoria - Lazy Long Horns RV Park (thinking a month in Victoria will be too long) I would spend only a week and then the rest in Hill Country. If you're over 62 there are many COE parks that are half price (need the pass first)and real gems but not FHU/cable TV/ or Internet. A week here and a week there makes for an enjoyable experience and a nice way to explore a nice area.

We did the Texas gulf coast in 2010. We liked the Pioneer Beach resort on Mustang Island (Port Aransas) and on South Padre Island we preferred the KOA to the county park (Isla Blanca) there, less stickers.

We were there in December and we found it cool and windy, it may be better later in the winter.

Take warm clothes.

Depending on when you're leaving and how long you'll be gone I would suggest that you do the whole Texas Gulf coast and not just CC.

You'll find little hidden treasures (and some real duds) along the way. Start up in Galveston, and work on down to South Padre Island. Yes it will be more costly, but it will pay back in enjoyment and learning during that first year.

Try to be down near the border mid Jan to mid Feb. Even then it may not be the best weather if the current snowbird weather trend continues into 2015/16.

I agree, go a bit further south, Way more RV parks to choose from too.

Gulf Waters RV Resort is an awesome park comprised of privately owned spaces on Mustang Island. We highly recommend it.
