Yuma for a few days - upick? fresh foods

We will be heading to Yuma in a few days for a couple of days.
Are there upick places for any fruits/veggies?
Farmer's markets with good prices?
Anything we should see do?
Hiking?
Should we go to algodones for mex food? where?
  • There is a u-pick on US 95 N. when crops are in season. On 5E. south of 32nd is a u-pick fruit when in season. Telegraph Pass which parallels I-8 on the north side of the interstate east of Foothills Blvd. is a good hike. Please take plenty of water! In Algodones just as you cross the border turning left and walking past DRs. Camacho office is a good sit down eatery. Can't remember the name. Also into the first cross street, go left to top of hill, another good eatery which is an outside eatery, again don't remember the name. On the south east corner of the first intersection behind some trinket shops is a great place for beer and food. Outside table under umbrellas. Again at the first intersection and going right about a half a block on south side is a shrimp taco sidewalk stand. UM,um!
  • Go west across the river into CA., take the first exit. Follow it back to the right under the RR, then go north out of Winterhaven. There are a couple of retail produce growers a few miles north along the way. I don't know of a pick your own. You will find Medjool date growers as well.
  • The winter veggie season is just getting started, several longtime roadside stands are not yet in operation. Grapefruit - lemons are starting to ripen, Oranges will be a while yet...just don't attempt to transport citrus into CA if that is your final destination. For my money, the Food City and Del Sol supermarkets offer produce priced better than true Farmers Markets, and just as fresh as roadside stands.

Palm Canyon is an interesting hike, some distance north of Yuma on Hiway 95.

  • Thank you everyone. We will do the Palm Canyon hike....sounds neat.

We are from NY so the seasons at home are quite different. Not sure how any of that goes here as it seems to me they could grow many things now compared to NY.

    Looking forward to exploring Yuma.
  • "seems to me they could grow many things now compared to NY"....you are correct. The Yuma area grows 90% of the winter Lettuce crop for the entire country; Cauliflower, Broccoli, Onions, Spinach, Celery, Citrus, Artichokes, Wheat, Dates are just some of the crops grown/harvested during the winter...but Alfalfa is harvested year round, melons, cotton, livestock grains/grasses during the summer....I'm sure I left something out.
