Fridge light master switch

The Dometic Americana fridge in my class C has an interior light (a nice feature). Unfortunately, this light is always on when the door is open, even if the fridge itself is off. This is annoying when putting the motorhome away for a spell; one wants to leave the fridge door ajar, so that it doesn't get all icky inside, but if the ground slopes at all the wrong way the door swings open enough that the light is on all the time, so the bulb must be removed or the master power turned off for the motorhome.

Which leads to this simple mod: the installation of a master switch for the fridge light. This is just a normal toggle switch, conveniently mounted, and wired in series with the door switch (and light bulb). Quite straightforward, though I probably spent more time doing it than I'll ever save in not needing to remove and replace the bulb.

Although it's not exactly obvious from the pictures, I set up the switch to operate horizontally. Probably a slide switch would be a slightly more appropriate option, but I had this switch in my cabinet o' parts 'n' stuff but did not have a suitable slide switch.

  • I never thought about the refer light being on with the doors open while in storage. I always disconnect both sets of batteries due to other parasitic draws.

  • Weird my light is off if the power button is off. That looks great and looks like it will solve the problem.
