Got tired of that ho-hum winnebago sightseer logo

Hello folks.

This is Bill Aggie. I own a 2002 Winnebago Sightseer class A motorhome. For any of you that know this coach, you also know the sightseer logo is somewhat lame and on an older motorhome, it's especially lame when the decal starts curling and fading.

I am retired from the safety and security industry but for my retirement I decided to make motorcycle and boat decals which lead to me making a replacement logo of my liking for my worn out graphics on my coach.

The stock Winnebago Sightseer logo is the word Sightseer with this understated tree image.. which is the only thing on my motorhome that I didn't like from day one. Well the sun and years took it's toll so the other day I removed that section of graphics and set myself up for having to put something in it's place. I thought I would share with you what I did and maybe provoke some "on the edge" out there to go ahead and upgrade their exteriors. This first step now has me thinking to fix those dated graphics.

I know this is not a stock logo but the last thing I ever planned was to make another one of those orphaned tree things that Winnebago sometime ago thought it was a good idea. This (my version) is what I would have made for the coach if given the opportunity to have come up with the brand graphics.

FYI, I work with safety reflective materials so rather than use stock vehicle vinyls this logo is a DOT APPROVED night reflector as well. If I happen to be parked alongside the roadway somewhere this logo will light up like a road barrier highway type material. I will take the time to post a night photo if anyone out there is interested enough to make it interesting to post.

So this is the start for my coach exterior dress up. I'm pondering what to do with the sides and the very 90's look of the 2002 graphics on this an other coaches. The cost to repaint and refinish this coach is just way too much, so I'll eventually give it an updated look using wide format graphics representative of todays kind of coach exterior. It will take some time!

I was the one asking about the decal making. You did a great job of explaining it! Clearly, it is something that I would not want to try myself. Your suggestion about a sign shop, and checking with several, was excellent. Thank YOU!

ALfred622, If you decide you want to design something, I'll give you a small run-down on how to design it. You can then shop it locally and get someone to make it for you. You don't need an expensive CAD style drawing program to create artwork that some sign guy can follow, so let me know if you need help and I'll be happy to explain what you need to do and how to draw it.

  • Wow, I did have a photo of the original logo. I don't know why but this always got under my skin. I just hate that tree image for some reason. You can see here how badly faded this original graphic became.

  • I saw some art students at our university here doing a mural on an apartment building. I did not ask a price as I am not ready to fix the outside yet, but asked if they would be interested in doing several murals on a RV. One of the students when I described how I wanted to do the back of my class A, was in tuned with me. I cannot wait until 2015. I will have the decals taken off and have it painted one color - white or off white - then they will use air brush technics and automobile paint. I cannot wait since I am tired of looking like everyone else's RV.

Good idea. If by boss you mean the lady in your life, I listen to my boss too! (most of the time).
  • Decal Making

"decal making" would be in the same category as a vinyl sign shop. Any of those guys can make these kinds of logos, or whatever you want. Yes, it takes training and special equipment but it's a fairly simple process once a person is trained in it.

To make this Winnebago Sightseer decal what I had to do was template it in a cad style graphics editor. Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw would be example of such. First I drew out the black outline shape. Next I created the Winnebago template and then I created the SightSeer wording in a curved font style. There are 4 layers here. Solid black on the bottom, a white backing behind the grey template, then a gold metal layer with the words SighSeer. These layers are formatted for a vinyl cutter and I cut these templates out of vinyl sheeting. Only the white backing behind the grey is reflective... but it's good enough to make a night marker for safety.

Then they are layered in a stack to build the whole image. The stack is bonded with adhesives and the whole "decal" is then placed on the coach after removing the graphics that were in place. I over lapped the original with this design so the light/faded parts would not be seen from the near full color tone image left over from where the original graphic was.

If you have a design in mind get with me and I'll help you with it. Any sign guy can do this but some (a lot of them) think they are brain surgeons or something when you get their prices. A long time ago I was in a show in Washington DC. I needed a single line of text which I had to get locally from a sign guy. For 45 mins of his time and $3.00 in vinyl he charged me over $100.00 which is outrageous but I needed it. If you had someone make what I did for myself it should sell for no more than about $100.00 tops. It's about $15.00 in material but I spent about 3 hours in design and fabricating so $100.00 for it would not be out of line. $200.00 would.

On the plus side, check with a couple of sign shops if you do it locally and you are better off having the artwork to minimize their time and get prices. One guy will charge $50.00 for what another guy wants $200 for.

    Hope I explained it well.

P.S. THe forum did something strange. A fellow asked me what "decal making was" and I used the quote feature to reply. The quote was blank and the fellows message is now gone. Not sure how to reply to him or where his message went.
  • Looks great.

I'm in the process of replacing the graphics on a work boat and found a local guy to make the decals. He runs a sign-making shop and does stickers too. I'm using the white DOT reflective with black letters. Nothing fancy, the boss says keep it simple. Our agency logo wore out and was updated a long time ago. He's making the logo on a color-matched grey sticker to cover the shadow of the old one.
  • Thanks. I think it's Awesome too but compared to that original graphic. I wish I had taken a picture before I took it off. It was so horrible looking not sure how Winnebago ever settled on it. But each to their own I guess. Let me know when you do your sunset. I'd like to see what you did.
  • Awesome. I have a Sprinter decal on my tt that will be a picture of a sunset soon!
