Install the hatch shock absorber

Now to pose the question, I have floor hatch that I d like to install a pair of shock absorbers. The type that help lift the lid an then hold it in place.
Couple issues. How to figure the length of shock absorber
I need . Then how much you extend the shock when mounting?
Tips or suggestions.

Maybe a cabinet maker is who I need to ask. Lol. Thanks
