Luxeon Gen3 COB

Philips Lumileds Luxeon CoB Generation 3 are now widely available to us common folk.
More info here: Luxeon CoB Core Range

700lm to over 7000lm output, 35 volts DC, solder-free clamp style holders from TE Connectivity

The LEDs are ranked by current handling ability 200ma through 1.6 amps... 80 CRI easy to get, 90 CRI are special order

2200K through 5700K color temps

I have a pair of 2900 lm 3000k 80 cri leds on order, along with two holders and two 600 mA output boost converters. (12v in, 35v out)

At 21 watts, I'm interested to see if I can manage the heat while staying in the confines of existing RV fixture.

2900lm is double the output of an old fashioned 100w bulb :)

Edit: Oh... how big is this thing you ask? 20mm, little more than 3/4" diameter.
  • the heatsink turns out to be much too round for the oval shape porch light. I'll continue scrounging for better shaped heatsink, or a better shaped porch light :)
  • It lives!

I found a more reasonable heatsink, haven't checked the fit yet for the porch light just yet. Might need to visit the table saw and square off the heatsink just a bit.
  • That might come in handy if I started performing hysterectomies at the campground.
    ;)
  • They have arrived!

Roughly 2000 lumens... 34 volts at 0.6 amps. The heatsink is a quite a bit larger than I had expected, but I will be experimenting with several different thermal solutions.

Below the heatsink is a FlexBlock driver. It provides a constant current drive at 500ma, up to 48 volts output, from 12v input.
  • Maybe I'll turn my porch light into a scare light :) always been jealous of those 100+ watt floods on fifth wheels and class a's

There's a 30 watt 1156? incandescent bulb in there now, surprised it doesn't melt the plastic fixture.
  • You're installing this inside an RV? That oughta' be enough light.;)

Even after following the link I still wish I knew what this was all about.

It's a small, very high power LED. Typically used as a replacement for halogen or hid bulbs in retail shops, I want to see if I can make it work as an RV retrofit.
