42 Foot Toy Hauler with 2063 Pound Dry Pin Weight?

Hi All,

Evergreen's new toyhauler, the T3914 tips the scales with a dry wieght of almost 15K and a dry pin wieght of just over 2K.

42 foot, 15K Dry wieght, just over 2K dry pin wiegth....

Seems like a light pin wieght as loading the unit in the rear garage could possible bring the pin wiegth down to 1500 pounds....even considering all the stuff one would add forward of the axles...

Do you think they did this to accomadate the 250/2500 crowd?

Just found it interesting, this large a tow hauler with that light of a dry pin wieght.

You all's thoughts?

Has anyone purchased or weighed a Tesla T3914 yet?
I'm considering that model and would love to see some real world numbers.

My 42' loaded, but empty tanks, has 15640 on the axles and 3080 on the pin. Similar 3-slide floorplan to the model you referenced.

Truck has 12280 on its 6 wheels - full fuel tank.

Would I put this on a 3/4 ton? No, but there are a lot of people who feel luckier than I do who would.

Real world you will be closer to 25% pinweight - of an empty toyhauler. All the heavy stuff occurs on top and behind the axles, which while raising the gross weight, it lowers the pinweight. If it has an onboard genset, it is likely in the 4k+ range empty. The 2k pinweight on the brochure is salesmans speak.
TESLA Brochure doesn't list it, but the two listed are 2700 and 3300 lbs.

When I was looking at fifth wheels for a SRW, I found simple rule of thumb was that triple axles require a DRW tow. As others have posted, once you add fluids, options and gear you will be closer to 3500 lbs pin weight.

Another thing to think about is the weight rating of the wheels you have on the truck. I would think that you would need a larger truck to tow (vs move) this trailer. I can move the trailer with a Ford/Chev/Dodge 1500 series. But can I tow it safely? Nope.

Yes Sir thats for sure.

Its amazing how much stuff we pack into a hauler, the more storage area we have, the more we use it, least we do. Id rather have it with me and not need it then to need it and not have it. I go over max limits on our 32' 5vr every trip, and even with a SRW F350 LB 4X4 i can feel the how that weight affects the trucks handling, braking and level of safety comfort.

A hauler as large as the OP is describing in his post would be beyond my comfort level with any 3/4 ton truck.

Scary stuff for sure

That is unusually light pin weight. Maybe a typo. Though a full fresh water tank would add ~1400 lbs. Regardless, definitely dually territory.
The T3970 monster has a dry pin 3185 and 21K GVWR. Think I'd need a Freightliner.

plus the axles could be more centered on the trailer instead of further back for the weight to be so light on the pin.

I believe there was an individual on here not too long ago that had real problems with his toyhauler misbehaving when loaded or unloaded, can't remember which, due to the light pin weight. That's really pretty unusual to have a 5th wheel misbehave, and I believe he had the factory either replace it, or repair it, and I think it was replaced.

I don't think I'd care to pull a 42' toyhauler with only 2000 lb. in weight. The pin weight would only decrease as you loaded stuff in the garage, and IMO that could get downright spooky.

That is only a 14% dry pin weight (14,817# w/2063# pin weight)

With a GVWR of 20,063 and a 14% pin weight.......2808# pin weight.

So if ratio holds true......mfg. could very well be going after the newer 3/4 ton truck crowd.
Newer truck mfg. are touting high payloads/max towing numbers that were 1 ton territory not so long ago

Unless you put a military tank in the back it will never have a tongue weight as light as 1500#. Stated dry weight is 15K and GVWR is 20K, 5ers have pin weight of 20% or better, whether that puts this toyhauler in 3/4 ton truck territory is up to you, but it's a bit more than I would be willing to take on. These TH manufacturers must use special math, at 15K# dry-weight with no toys loaded, pin-weight will certainly be higher than 2K# on a 42' rig.

Definitely 1 ton diesel dually territory with a 20K# GVWR and it will have it's hands full when rig is fully loaded. Our TT TH dry and tongue weight was much heavier than what manufacturer stated and the pinweight on this Evergreen TH doesn't appear to be real world accurate. Even if it is accurate that is a lot of TH for a 3/4 ton truck, it would pull it but can't imagine towing comfort would be ideal.

Evergreen makes some very nice towables and this TH is very sharp. Toyhaulers are heavy creatures with very large tanks, with many having a couple of fuel tanks as well. Pin and tongue weights increase dramatically when lightly loaded or without any toys onboard, we have had our TH for a few years and now travel about half the time with no toys onboard. There are a few TH 5ers that can be towed by 3/4 ton trucks, but this 42' rig really requires more heft than any 3/4 ton truck can currently provide.
