5th wheel hitch differences

Many good name brands of 5th wheel hitches on the market with some being better than others. 2 that come mind as being in the top are B & W and Curt. What are the advantages/disadvantages, likes/dislikes of: B & W 18 K Patriot and Curt's "A" & "Q" series? Both seem robust and well made. Warranties? Both made in the USA. Looking to upgrade and mount in truck w/ rails.
  • FWIW - have been using the B&W Companion for several years. Initially pulled a 1997 Alpenlite 31 foot 5th wheel and recently a 2016 Wildcat Maxx FR262 RGX. Would not use anything else for a 5th wheel as I have used the basic 5th wheel hitches and other G/N style. The B&W is the best! I also pull a GN horse trailer so this fits best of both worlds for me. Especially nice is that I can have the 5th wheel hitch installed in 10 minutes and out is less time freeing up my truck bed. That is the thing I hated most about standard 5th wheel hitches - loss of the bed. One person can easily handle the B7W in and out of the truck. Don't leave home without it!
  • My dad has a Curt Q20 and complains of a lot of chucking in his ride. The hitch is a slider but there is a lot of slop in the hitch.

For my money, I would also buy the B&W.

    Thanks!

You will absolutely love the 18K Patriot, very user friendly, solid, quiet, easy to hook/unhook at any angle. I've no experience with the Curt, but if you LOOK at both, it will be an easy decision! Not that it matters, but while some Curt products are US made, I don't think their FW hitches are.

I recently bought a drop hitch with ball that is a Curt and is US Made, nice quality.
  • B&W "FANBOY" Club President here. The Curt is Made in China. My inlaw has the 25K Curt/RAM in his DRW Ram. I saw him a couple days ago and the first thing he told me while watching me disconnect from my RV with my B&W was "I have a lot of trouble getting mine to disconnect". He told me the exact same thing last Summer. I actually hitched and unhitched his Curt a couple times and it is not easy as it should be.

You DON'T want a difficult hitch that can lead to disaster. Besides that there are only 2 bolts holding the head to the base on each side of the Curt. There are 4 grade 8 bolts on each side of the B&W.

The Curt jaws are 1/2" thick and the B&W are a full 1" machined jaw. The Curt handle has a color coding system and a flimsy lock location. The B&W is a simple no question locking handle.

  • x2 on the B&W, but I'm a "fanboy". Great products and great service if you ever need it.

  • Actually the Curt 5th wheel hitch is not made in the USA. I'd pick the B&W over the Curt.
  • Not familiar with the newer hitches, on my 3th fiver with a 20K Reese, never a problem
