5th wheel hitch issue...

Good morning all.

I have a Reese 16K slider hitch. I have had it for four years. On my recent trip with my Montana, the hitch was making a ton of noise and banging around upon starts and stops. It was not sliding out of position but it was definitely moving a little and causing the noise.

What do I do about this and how do I troubleshoot it? I assume it is not normal.

Thanks.

  • I don't have that type of hitch, however when I heard noises like that and felt the banging it usually meant the hitch plate was too dry. I would grease it (dry lube) and the noises went away along with the banging at starts and stops. Worked every time....
  • I have a friend with the same hitch and he initially had the same problem. The store that installed the hitch had him increase his brake controller to but more on the trailer brakes and that stopped the problem.
  • was it moving in the rails?

I bought these after making my own, as my hitch wiggles in the rails.

  • I would first find out what is moving. Can you have someone look out the back window while moving? I have a Reece 16 slider also, nothing should be moving except the left/right pivot.
