any test before connecting trailer to generator (50amp)

I found an Onan 7kw generator last fall, fixed the bad drive pulley coupler and replaced the belt.. tuned it, new plugs...
will convert to tri-fuel.

got it all wired up to a 50amp outlet today, started it up and used my PI circuit tester, and it says all is good.

is there anything else I should test before hooking the trailer up
and turning on the A/C? I can and will power up smaller things first.

tvs, microwave..

do I need to flip the 120v breakers off, and enable 1 at a time?

the generator is full throttle all the time. pretty quiet all in all.
have the metal box built, just have to cut the floor in the front compartment.

I had a 4k that had a bad carb and converted it to propane using the kit provided by the company below. Very easy conversion and worked perfectly.

Abt $250 IIRC, much cheaper than the $500 onan carburetor.

    Also check -

    Central Maine Diesel
    and
    US Carburetion

    Both sell tri-fuel conversions.
Central Maine sells gens and does conversions.
Send them your carb, they modify & return.
Been awhile (not an Onan), but it was around $100.

US Carb wants 187 for the kit + 44 for the regulator kit, + 44 for the hose.

  • thanks!.. I tested the voltage, solid at 118 both legs. (don't have anything to check the HZ)

then connected trailer. turned on TV, the used my heat shrink gun, looked good... voltage fluctuated 118.2-120.3.
turned on A/C's one at a time, both started and ran. voltage holding the same fluctuation.. added microwave.. same.. had the stove light on,
saw a little dim of the light when the microwave came on.. (didn't try that with shore power, will review)..

    looks good.

$200 for generator, $40 for the parts.. $150 for the cage.
now need the tri-fuel kit ($200) and something to start it remotely (onan ec30W, ouch) and a venturi kit.
  • I would check it with a very good multi-meter. Check all voltages, 120 and 240, also frequency at the full speed to see if it is at 60 HZ. Put some kind of load on it besides your trailer for the first time to see if all ok.
  • I agree that the hair dryer should work well to test the engine/generator.

First check it with a voltmeter. You should have 120 volts +/- about 8 volts. Under load, then the voltage might drop to the 115V range. Then plug in the hair dryer, it might drop to the 115 or 112 volts, but really should be near 118V.

Then you can feel safe adding the A/C units that are so much more expensive to replace. ..

All in all, you should be able to run a coffee maker, electric heater, hair dryer and 2 A/C units all at once, putting a very large load on the generator. With all those loads running, if you are getting 110 - 118 volts, then it is fine!
