ATC 28 front bedroom

I will be taking delivery of a new ATC 28' front bedroom toy hauler at the end of Sept. We are driving to Mich to pick it up and will be road tripping our way back to Boise Idaho. No local dealers so we opted to make a road trip of it rather than pay $3k plus for delivery charges. First time I have ever spent this much $ sight unseen for a unit. We are buying based solely on internet research an would welcome any comments/impressions of current owners. What I was able to find on the net was very encouraging concerning build quality and the options offered were just what we were looking for. We will haul a XP1000 Razor or a Indian Chief Vintage motorcycle on road trips. Tow with a 2015 Ram 3500 DRW. Just my wife and I and the dog so I think there will be ample space. Would like to hear from current owners of ATC units....likes/dislikes, etc.

Sorry no pictures, tried IMGUR but no luck. So far approx 2k miles all east of the Rockies. Leaving in 3-4 weeks for the west coast, and will be out west all winter. Mostly northern Cali and Southern Oregon, but the desert is always a goal when the rain get to be too much.


Towing with 2015 ram laramie crew cab,factory 4 corner air suspension, 3.92, 8 speed zf, and all packages. I have towed on the ball around town with no issues but usually hook up the Andersen WD when going any distance.Its easy, quiet and helps in heavy cross winds etc. I am sure 3/4 ton and up will be excellent for this rig, I just like a half ton if it can do the job.
The air suspension is just a huge game changer for a 1/2 ton, and the little turbo diesel with all those gears and lower rear end ratio never finds a point of drama, even in stiff winds. Long grades are a down shift and I keep it always under 2900 rpm. I am trying to eek out a few more miles on the SRA Good years, I do feel a bit of wiggle, but its all is very stable even with these questionable tires. Looking at XL or LT, really thinking LT but hate to loose the cloud like ride this thing offers. I have at 65 averaged around 12-13, goes south quickly after that, but still incredible for approx 8400 lb when wet and loaded. At altitude is where the diesel will shine, it did last year with our 21 Camplite.

So, the next test is out west, I feel confident she will perform as expected. The ATC is just a beautiful combination of what I wanted. All metal construction with attention to detail, the front bedroom and bath are the huge by my standards and the generator on board with a push of the button is like a motor home but not the issues of one. 100 gallons of water is right over the rear axle, so this puppy has some serious ability to haul a load. It has very little sway compared to our 28 Airstream and 21 camplite, very stable. Again a high hitch weight contributes to that stability.

Look around, peel the onion back. Nothing compares for the money. We use it as a travel trailer, that speaks volumes. Nothing I could find came close, and that includes Airstream. Price was not the final issue, construction quality and living space w/o slide was. I refuse to own a slide ever again. We raise the hapi jac, have all the carpeting, bought an 8 ft FOM bag, incredible comfort, and use one folding benches for our living room. Some nights I stay in the back, my wife get her queen sized bed and door closed. Bathroom is in the middle so again lots of privacy etc. You really need to see the doors, cabinets etc to get a feel for how well it is made. The RV industry should be ashamed of what they charge and give compared to this coach. Look at the frame and underside construction, it is in my mind overbuilt for how we use it. We have the rear screen and lower the ramp, that is a view no other RV can give. It is short on storage space, but we are card carrying minimalist so no problem for us.

We love it, ATC hit a home run and it takes years of RV ownership of all kinds to really appreciate it.

Do you think a standard 6.75 bed 2017 F250 Super Duty SRW would also not need the sway distribution setup?


I wouldn't think it would make much difference between an F250 or an F350 as long as they are both SRW trucks, only subtle differences between the two. Long bed vs short bed might make a bit of a difference. The weights on these ATC trailers shouldn't overload any (fairly recent) 3/4 or 1 ton truck.

Edit: looks like HVAC is towing his 28' with a half ton Ram. Any issues at all hvac? How does your truck do with your trailer? Have any pictures with the truck and trailer connected?

did you buy from a dealer and then you are picking up? Or factory direct?


I spoke with the factory and they prefer you buy from a dealer.....they are not staffed for prep/delivery to the public. The dealer in Schoolcraft Michigan is only and hour drive from the factory. They are not charging any delivery or set up fees. So we are taking delivery at the dealership in Schoolcraft, Mi.
Not sure about your truck needing wd and sway control. My truck weighs 9200 lbs dry with a tow capacity of 30K lbs. With the trailer loaded properly 10% plus tongue wt and my truck I think I will be ok without wd and swaycontrol. But I will update after getting trailer if needed.

I'm actually over in east Idaho near the Montana border.


We are usually up in that area at least 1-2 times a year on our way to Forsyth or Big timber ,Mt for the Quigley shoots. Black powder cartridge stuff.

I did that a few years ago......flew into Indianapolis, In. Dealership picked me up at the airport and drove 85 miles back to store. Signed the papers and I drove off that afternoon on my new 2008 Yamaha Raider. Took 3 days to get back to Idaho...... but it was a great ride!

No, that is a custom trunk I had made by Osprey Leather in Minn. The Chief is a 2016.......most comfortable cruiser I have ever rode.
