Having never been to/through New York, and are planning a trip this May to see New York City. We are from St.Augustine, FL - pulling a 35' Bighorn 3010RE coming from the Hickory Run SP in White Haven, PA and going to Wildwood SP on Long Island. Is there a best route for someone having never driven in New York? Or is there a RV Park or Campground that would be better to stay for a 13 day visit to see the sights of New York City? Any help would be great.

I am originally from LI...you do NOT want to camp there and see the city. As mentioned Liberty or the KOA in Newburgh NY. It is about 15 min off interstate 84 and they run a tour but to the city. You could also stay in Rhinebeck NY at Interlake and take Amtrack into the city and while there take in the Old Rhinebeck Areodrome (largest collection of flying planes from the early 20th century as well as the homes of FDR and Vanderbilt and the Culinary Institute of America all in Hyde Park about 10 to 15 min south of the campground. If you are coming from WHite Haven its rt 209 north to route 84 east. For the KOA its exit 7 for Rhinebeck its exit 6 onto the NYS thruway north to the Kingston exit.

Tapen Zee is the prefered way to get over the Hudson when compared to the GW bridge and cross bronx express way. If your goal is NYC, then something neat metro north or NJ transit is going to be easiest. You are not going to want to drive into Manhatten and first find somewhere to park a truck and then pay the ransom for said parking.

The only times I RV'd into LI was when I was up there for family.

OK FLA-NET reviews are not that good! What about the county park at Croton Point? Using Earth Goggle it looks pretty nice and has several good reviews. There is a Metro-North train station not too far away that could get us to New York City. How is the Tappan Zee Bridge to go over pulling 35' 5th wheel. Need a little help her e as we have never traveled New York.

I live on Long Island. You are better off staying at the KOA in Kingston NY, Black Bear Campground in Florida NY, Liberty campground in NJ or Jellystone in Gardiner NY. My favorite of the four is Jellystone..

Unless you are planning to do sightseeing on Long Island I would search for campgrounds in New Jersey or Westchester County in New York. Wildwood is a quite a distance from NYC for sight-seeing. If you plan on touring Long Island it's not a bad choice. To get to Wildwood your lesser of the evils is taking the George Washington bridge to the cross Bronx to the throggs neck bridge. All congested and bumpy. Take the clear view expressway to 495E out to,William Floyd parkway and then north to either 25 or 25 A not sure which to get to wildwood. FYI the William Floyd parkway should be the only parkway you should try to use. Trailers and RV's are a definite no no on Most NY parkways. Good luck and stay alert!
