We are in the process of deciding MH or Fifth Wheel. We are about a year away from purchasing. Then first year out after purchasing would be for just 4 months of travel and come back to s&b to work 8 months. Then, maybe, work-camping part years or full time after that. We are open (read undecided).We have a 9year old dog and a young cat (1 year old). Neither one is "car trained". We are leaning toward a Fifth Wheel because I'm 6'8" and for the feel of the 5'er. We're interested in peoples experiences traveling with a cat and dog. We figured the dog in the truck, possibly in a kennel in the backseat of a dually crew-cab truck. What about the cat?? What do people do with the cat when traveling... in a kennel in the truck...in a kennel in the Fifth Wheel...loose in the Fifth Wheel...???

I have a beagle about 14 rears old. He stays home and my daughter and her husband make sure he is OK, and have all he needs. He would be miserable traveling. Also he sheds very bad, and would make a miss in 5th. I watch people who bring their pets, and they are controlled by them. I'm not against having the pets along, but for me just don't want to have to get up and walk them early in the morning.

My 3 Collies ride in my crew cab truck. I took the back seat out and built a flat area with dog beds. They sleep going down the road. You don't here a thing from them, great travelers. That's why I bought a RV so I could bring my Collies. No cat. When Mom and Dad had a cat it rode in the car with 2 GSD's.

One of our cats gets car sick in the pickup (pickup sick?) but has no problem with the 5er. They both crawl under our bedcovers when it's time to leave. Some people would say we need to put them in a cage....that stresses them more than the off-chance there is an accident. Watch for them when you bring the slides in. I'd start car training them now.....a short trip then build up to a long trip. It's not a problem at all for us!!!!!

X2 on cat loose in the 5er. When she hears the slide motor start she heads for her safe place. Before I put the slides back out, I make sure she's in a safe position.

Had our Siamese ride in the truck ONCE. I told the wife the noise had to stop or the car had to go. We tried for hours of driving to get the cat to be quiet. So I said the cat is going in the RV. After a couple hundred miles with the cat in the back we stopped at a rest area and expected the cat to be totally frazzled. Opened the door and the cat met us with a very nice meow.

Cat rides in the RV.

Get a 5er you won't regret it.

I would think dogs would be just fine in the travel trailers but a cat will hit the road in a heart beat if you let it outside... They will not come back to you if you call them (Ours won't at any rate). We lost one doing doing this when we was all ready to leave the camp ground when the cat got away from us. We looked for hours and finally just had to leave. The cat was probably watching us from a distance the whole time...

Sad day for us...

We usually have our small dog with on trips...

One cat in a 5er; she goes under the covers on the bed while traveling.

Couple of times it was too hot in 5er, put in cage on back seat of truck (she is not a fan of this).

They all ride in the back of the super-cab.
The dogs have their own beds and wear a harness that is clipped into the seat-belts.
The cats are in a carrier between the dogs.
We tried the cats in the trailer and it terrified one of them too much.
On the down side, the cats don't understand "time to go biffy", so we end up stopping, frequently, to let them use the litter box.

Our dog, and previous dog, ride inside the TT most of the time. Sometimes in the bed, but it's usually full and the cab is FULL with 5 people so no room for a large lab.

He curls up on the couch, with a sheet on it, and chills for the ride. It's rarely too hot, and never really any hotter than the bed in full sun would be.
