The rubber boot takes away the ability to climb up water supply hose and enter the rig. Yes they can eat through many materials. I don't see why they would bother with this entry point because it is so closed up.
People have issues with rodents chewing out an opening because there path is marked with sent and they desire to still utilize the path. If one had an issue with past activity it would be wise to replace the water supply hose (to get rid of the trail sent) and install this device. Stainless steel wool stuffed into the boot is an option but is not necessary unless there is noticeable activity.
