Dish or Direct TV?

Which one is better? We have never had satellite. Seriously considering making the switch from cable to satellite at home. One benifit would be to be.able.to use it camping. If you were to do this which would you choose.? Thanks, John

Op'er here. I notice with the tailgater you can get the HD channels with Dish. Is that not the case with DirectTV?

DISH offers twice the chance of having a clear shot from a given location over DIRECT. DISH programming is available from two different directions, one in the SW sky ( Western arc) and the other in the SE (Eastern arc) sky. The same 3 LNB antenna can be used to access programming from either direction. The Western Arc satellites are at 110, 119 and 129 orbital locations. The Eastern Arc satellites are at 61.5, 72.7 and 77 orbital location.

The arc that is installed at a home location is normally based on where a customer's HD locals are uplinked and their location relative to the Mississippi River.. Some local markets upload HD locals to both arcs (mine are that way). SD Locals are available from both arcs.

So, with DISH, when I get to a camping location, I look to see which Arc offers the best shot from TWO choices (DIRECT only offers one choice) adjust my antenna for the one that offers the best shot, and use that one. Few campers know about this. When I use the Eastern arc, I frequently have helpful folks try to tell me that my antenna is pointing in the wrong direction and it tilted the wrong way.

If you use Dish tailgater you can pay $10 more a month and get local channels anywhere you go without having to call in-no hassle-no contract. You can also turn it off and back on anytime you want to.

A question for Direct TV users - does anyone full-time with no Direct TV home contract/ setup?

I am Full Time since Oct. 1999 and have been a DTV customer since 93-94.
DTV has the location of my HR34, HR23, H21, and H25 all of them inside the MH, as being at my mailing address.

And none of them have been closer then 5 miles from that address. 🙂
I don't get locals from DTV. But I do get the E & W DNS stations.
I do get over 24 local stations OTA from my Batwing.

Sign up with them using your mailing address.
Which should be your domicile for all mail, plates, drivers license, insurance etc.

I have Dish in my sticks n' bricks. Someone mentioned transferring their receiver from home to their camper each time. Dishanywhere saves doing that.
I've got a sling (one time charge) when I'm traveling in the 5er. I've downloaded Dishanywhere and use this wherever I am. No extra monthly charges.
The hopper is an additional monthly charge although, it does have a lot of features.
Also, Dish now has a new receiver that has a sling built into the receiver for your sticks n' bricks.

Had DISH at home. Found out after we got it that Fox and either ABC or NBC were not available. As we were locked in for 2 years we were out of luck. Suggest you ask what, if any, channels you'll NOT have. 23 months later, we dropped DISH.

You have to have some sort of home base address. We use our home address even tho we're almost never there as the Service address, but our billing address is thru the Good Sam Mail Forwarding service. To get the Distant Network Service is really easy. Fill out their form, include a copy of your RV reg and agree to pay the additional fee. We've had the DNS's for approx 3 years now. If you record any network shows on a regular basis the DNS works great.

I was only referring to your earlier post when you stated if at home and on the road, Dish is the way to go...I merely stated that you can do the same thing with DirecTV that one could with Dish. Dish also doesn't offer all the programming that Direct TV does, it's easily researched by seeing what Dish offers and compare to what Direct TV offers...

Directv has a Distant Network Services offering for RVs. You get LA or NY locals and it work everywhere. You have to file paper work for the RV and pay a small additional fee.

No land line...best thing we EVER gave up....no solicitors calling since we went with cell phones...and in the long run a lot cheaper...


and as stated above...I had Dish before and do 99% of our camping in the mountains...more than several times, couldn't "shoot" over the mountains and trees in some areas...you aim higher for Direct...have never had an issue getting out of a valley over the mountains or trees....don't do much camping on "flat land", so I opted for Direct TV.
