Double towing in GA and FL (update)

Alright everyone, for those of you who might have been wondering how my trip double towing the 5ver and a motorcycle (79 Shovel) to Daytona for bike week went, wonder no more. It was a great trip except for breaking down at the Flying J truck stop on exit 2 in GA. Long story short the truck blew the high pressure fuel line that runs off the pump to the back of the motor and dumped probably a 1/4 tank of fuel for about 20 miles before I stopped at my usual stop for gas. Man, it was all over everything! It took me about 5 hours to figure out the issue, tear the engine apart to get access, locate the line,(the 1 time the stealership came through, no one else had the line or could make one)unload my bike, ride the 40 miles round trip to get the line, get back and install, pack up, eat, and get back on the road. The trailers pulled great at a cruising speed of 70mph and as fast as 80mph passing. I had a cop in Florida follow behind me going through the Ocala National Forest with no issues. I left at 3am and arrived at the Cackleberry CG at 3pm. It was a long journey! The way back only took about 6 hours and was event free other than loosing a taillight and the tongue jack wheel to the motorcycle trailer. My buddy following me ate that. I also had about 3 other cops in GA tail behind me with no issue. About 750 miles round trip. Not bad for the 1st time. I will definitely double tow again. Funny thing is this trip I didn't see anyone double towing. Go figure! Also if anyone is wondering I mounted my GoPro on the back of the 5ver and it worked like a champ using the app with my phone mounted to the dash.

FJ, so if you don't get caught it's ok? Successful bank robbery but not caught is ok? Or is the line somewhere between illegal towing and robbery? Are you going to draw that line? Please tell us if at your job a mistake is ok if an inspector or supervisor doesn't notice.

I don't know that I'd change things. If it's illegal then he didn't get stopped and made the trip just fine. If it was illegal and he checked, then he might not have even gone, and he would have missed the trip.

The worst that happens is you get stopped and have to make alternate plans, and maybe pay a fine. Not a biggie in the overall scheme of things.

I am just guessing, but perhaps the LEOs following you were because double-towing is illegal in both Florida and Georgia according to the compendium of towing laws I found online recently. I have no idea why they didn't stop you, but evidently @WTP-GC is right: let the tourists do whatever they want.

Or maybe that compendium of laws by state is wrong? Could be. But you might want to look into that before next time. Just in case.

They used to, then as the years passed it became acceptable to haul your motorcycle to a motorcycle rally. In fact some people stow their trailer a couple miles out of town, and ride into town. Kind of like riding your bike to an RV rally. ๐Ÿ™‚ I always figured if I went to a motorcycle rally I'd ride my bike.

To be fair Sturgis and Daytona have ceased to be motorcycle rallies, now they're just places to drive to.

If you don't like a law and/or don't agree that double towing is unsafe, just ignore the law? Is that what I'm hearing here? And you advocate that law enforcement should just ignore it too because its a special event?

Welcome to FL law enforcement practices 101 ๐Ÿ˜‰
Let the tourists come to these major events (bike week, speed weeks, etc.) and spend their money, and then let them leave as fast as possible. Kind of an unwritten rule. On major travel days, a single stopped vehicle with flashing LEO lights can back up traffic for miles. Unless there's some egregious sin being committed, let 'em roll.

Glad the 'fuel line' was ONLY issue

75/80 MPH double towing :H

Might want to check those 5vr & motorcyle trailer tires for their 'speed rating'
Unless you have 'upgraded' them...bet 65 mph is rating on sidewall

Double towing and 75/80 MPH :H
Is it time for your medication or mine?

Thanks for the update! It is good to have someone out there to test the system! What God fearing LEO, would give a man a ticket, for double towing his bike to bike week. ๐Ÿ™‚ Hope the bike ran well, and no issues, having too much fun, etc.

Great idea with the GP, sounds like a handy setup!
