Fan Clutch on Tow rig

My Ford 06 F250 fan clutch seems to be locked up when engine is running. How do you tell if the wires are on it correctly? Anyone know? All answers appreciated.
  • You can't plug it in but one way. If it's stuck on all the time then it is likely the computer telling it to do so for some reason - even if it's wrong.
    i would call a dealer or do some research on your own to see if there's a TSB or software change to correct the situation.
  • Not sure on an 06 but the ones I have worked on have a coil wound spring
    that when it gets hot allows it to lock up. the fan will always turn even when cold but you can usually hear a different pitch in the sound when they unlock and lock like going up a steep hill when its hot!
    I have seen the springs get weak where they stay locked up.
  • I just changed the clutch on my 02 F250 for the reverse reason--It never lock in when towing in hot weather and therefore the coolant would overheat. Mine is like described above--it has no wires going to it but has the spring that senses temp. change. Mine never worked from day one--Only took 11 years for me to figure out it was not working. BTW if you plan on changing it yourself it is right hand threads--was told by 3 different people that should have known that it was left hand. Another note is that it only overheated when towing in hot weather--never without 5er hooked to it and never in cool weather.
  • As Sandyhillbill said, my 06 F350 would not overheat unless pulling my fiver in hot weather up a hill. Without a load you will never know you have an issue. My mechanic replaced mine and said he purchased it through the local Cat dealer, said its better unit than the Ford OEM. He also said it was pain in the a$$ to replace, his first one to do, he primarily works on Chevy/GMC products. Now when pulling load up a hill it sounds like a plane is about to take off under my hood when the fan kicks on, does not stay on long but will make you take notice when it comes on. Good luck. Travel on.

    Dealer = no. (Unless you like "BOHICA")

    Research = yes.

    Ask on one of the Ford Diesel forums.

    Lots of talent, info - even genuine (employed) techs.

    (May simply be time to replace the clutch).
