Faulty Landing Gear

Hi Everyone.
I have a 2008 Rockwood Ultralight. The landing gear is from the Venture Mfg Co.
The motor on the landing gear is on the drivers side then of course the connecting rod goes to the passenger side.
When I put the landing gear down the passenger side works great but the drivers side with the motor on it starts to go down and then stops while the passenger side continues to work as it should.
I can push it down while it is going down and it starts working again and then stops again. This happen when I have it go up or down. Does anyone know what the problem may be. I am very mechanically inclined but it would sure help if I knew what is inside before I open the unit up. Don't want to open it up and have springs come flying out.
Thanks in advance
Gary
  • Pull the foot off the leg and see if any shaving fall out. Mine had been binding for a long time, same symptoms as yours. About a month ago, I was raising it off blocks under the frame and the whole drivers side dropped 4 inches.

When I took the foot off, a bunch of shavings from the worm gear came out. Evidently something (bolt/washer/nut??) was stuck in there, eating away at the gear every time I used it. Ended up putting in a new leg and it works like a champ.

Like others said, inspect the top gears under the cover. If they are chipped or worn, you can get a replacement kit from Venture Manufacturing or even cheaper on the internet (less than $60).
  • Op, be aware what your old bevel gears are. I.E.- Number of teeth. Different gears for different weight trailers. Local camper supply store here, usually has rebuild kits in stock. Gears, roll pins etc.

Worm gear is stripped , or the fixed nut that it screws up ,and down on is stripped ,or the drive gears at the top of the leg are missing a bunch of teeth, should be able to hear something if the drive gears were missing teeth .

Easy to work on , as been said take off the inspection plate on top, and look at the gears, that would be the first place to start, and if they look okay. you are going to have to get that side of trailer blocked up or hook to the truck, and remove the leg, and inspect the worm gear, and the nut. They are easy to take apart.
  • HERE is the 'landing gear spec' sheets from Venture Mfg. Co. Pg. 3 has exploded view of leg
  • I have the same system, my problem was on the right(curb) side. I took the leg apart and found the jack screw stripped. Mine finally stopped working when the screw got jammed up with the nut. There are several options, replace the whole leg, replace the jack screw, or overhaul the whole thing with new gears, shear pins, etc...Good luck, hope all goes well.
  • Sounds like u have some broken teeth of the beveled gear at the top. Take the small metal cap off top of leg that's bad a take a light and look at the gear.
