Fifth Wheel Weight Checks

I read in a post on a another forum that the CHP in California are starting to stop fifth wheel RVs and check weights. Any truth to this or is it just someone wanting to stir the pot? Thanks in advance.
  • This does happen but it is at controlled checkpoints setup at the exit from Glamis. You get a ton of folks with extremely long extremely overloaded tow haulers pulling the entire thing with 3/4 tons. Reportedly they give you a chance to get a properly rated tow vehicle before calling in a tow. Otherwise no they do not weigh rvs rolling down the road.

What number are they going to use to determine if they're overweight? Truck GVWR? Trailer GVWR? GVCWR? The sticker on the door of the truck? The license plate rating? Take your pick.

As I understand it, over a tires weight capacity is the only thing they can write you up for. Also proper license for rig your towing.

  • Old Biscuit, that cracks me up. On the topic it left mt wondering if they pulled an out of state rig and it was over weight what are they going to do to get them under weight.
  • "Legal" is a pretty gray area when it comes to non-commercial towing. Very open to interpretation.
