Fire, CO, and Propane Safety Inputs sought...

Fire Extinguisher in the basement....near the battery. In case a short or spark catches something on fire....you have it right there and don't have to run to the TV or inside the trailer.

Moderators should consider adding a "Fire/CO/Propane/Battery Safety" Fourm....

Any thoughts for improving ease of getting out the BR window?

I keep a 10 Lbs ABC extinguisher in the bedroom. A 2 1/2 Lbs ABC unit at the door/kitchen area, and a 10 Lbs ABC in the outside storage area. I also carry one in the TV.

I've had a couple occasions when we grabbed the extinguisher in the outside compartment to assist someone else. Never actually had to use it.

The most important thing we added was a Halon fire suppression system to the rear compartment of the rv fridge....got it from Mac the fire guy....

Forget about "calming flames" - related to propane...:S

Basically the only propane "issue" with RVs is the AC/Propane frig.
(See the "stickys" in the *TECH ISSUES* forum)

The area involved (prone to fire) is *not* accessible from the interior of your RV - it's behind the "box".

The fusible link extinguishers (expensive!) are intended to be mounted there. (See Mac's "products").

How do you effectively douse that type of fire *if* it's propane & the fridge?..:h
You're outside, so shut off the supply at the propane bottle/s.
Then consider your extinguishment options.

Simple stove top fires are *not* related to propane "problems", but caused by the same situations you may incur at your sticks and bricks - usually a grease fire - or something left unattended on the stove, which is more likely at your S&B than your RV.

Train the "cook" to keep an appropriate size lid for the pot or pan in use - to smother a fire.
Ordinary baking soda is great also. A little goes a long way!

One blast from a dry chem extinguisher will certainly extinguish the fire, but make one HECK of a mess!.:(
There *are* better -but more expensive- hand held extinguisher options than dry chem!

BTW - once you read the problems with the brands of AC/Propane refrigerators - easy to see why an AC/DC or residential (AC only) compressor type unit is the way to go when it's time for a replacement..:W

My logic on the fire extinguisher in the BR was in case of a fire at night. The extinguisher would be handy to calm any flames on the way out. Thinking about it, in the event of a fire when we are in bed, I guess the proper course is to just exit thru the window and not try to get out the door which is in the rear of the coach.

Your point got me to thinking why the extinguisher is placed near the door in our 5th wheel. I suspect it is so that when going for the extinguisher, one is moving toward the exit?

This is what i like about our rear kitchen model with a middle door, ALL items that use propane are rear of the door!

Food for thought:

Dry Chem extinguishers make a mess!

Mac sells a one gallon P-can CAF system extinguisher.
AFFF+ Foam extinguisher.
The one gallon size is smaller than the usual (2 1/2 gal) water extinguishers you see. Lighter - easier to handle.

The extinguishing agent is AFFF Plus and water.
Not expensive - and you fill and pressurize yourself.
That means you can try a few "test runs" with plain water before adding the supplied AFFF.

Another thought is a CO2 extinguisher for kitchen fires.
No mess if you use it - no powder to pack down - but a bit expensive

Lastly - is a halon extinguisher with fusible link for your fridge compt.

No connection with his business - (I'm) just an old fire guy that used to teach foam extinguishing systems.

Of ALL this stuff - the EXIT plan is the MOST important..:W
