Well, we are really doing it. Sold the house last week, now we pick up the new 5th wheel (303RLS Grand Design) this weekend and off we go by the end of the month. We are going to hang local for a few weeks for shakedown trips near the dealer and then head north from Atlanta to who knows where.Our intent is to be on the road for a year so so and then buy a house wherever we think we want to live. We did a 10 week trip (in 25 ft. TT) last year to Banff then Vancouver back to Atlanta. So we are not complete noobs to long trips. That trip was scheduled to the day for each location. This trip, no reservations. We'll stay wherever, whenever, as long or short as we want.I am sure we will have some questions etc. for you guys and look forward to sharing experience.Travel smooth.Steelhands

As major holidays such as July 4th get closer you might consider reservations unless you don't have a problem boondocking or a truck stop.When you think you've found a place you want to buy a house again, rent one there for at least six months before you buy.Other than that, have fun.Bill

Congradulations, the GD is a great rig! My plans are almost exactly what you are going to do, no specific plans, if you enjoy an area stay a little longer, if not move on! We plan to rent our stick house while on the road, we can sign a one year lease, and if our plans change we can go back, otherwise we could sell at end of the year! Whatever you do, enjoy this experiance to the fullest, try not let the small things hold you back! Good luck!

TimnJo - my wife wasn't prepared to give up our house just yet. On of our iterations of discussion was the idea of selling our house, traveling for a year, and then moving back to buy a new house. That was too much to swallow for her, so we are renting our house out for a year. We are using a property management company so after our getting the house ready for showings and then tenants, we shouldn't have to do anything but collect a check (minus property management fees of 7-10% of the rent and any repair expenses that there are). If the property management company does their job right, we shouldn't have to do anything until we are ready to come back (if we come back here).

For us, the rent is like $20/month shy of our mortgage, home owner's insurance, and homeowner's association fee. The company that we picked take 10% of the rent, so we will still be on the hook for a small monthly portion. But the amount of monthly money that it frees up is significant. In Maryland, the tenant also pays utilities which can be significant in this house.

To be honest, it started with a rock climbing accident. Two years ago I fell and was very seriously injured which led to the end of my working career. Now on Homeland Security disability but at my age, (60) I will be on my regular retirement soon. The physical limitations are pretty severe.

Anyway, no job, wife retired, heck, let's go. Plus the real estate market is much better. We sold the house in three days at list price. Last year we camped in northern Washington state, Port Angles area, in the "rain shadow". We loved having the straits of Juan De Fuca in front of us and the Olympic mountains at our back. We "think" we want to live there but are not committed to that location.

So, we roll. Who knows where or when.

I'd start driving north for the 1st half and south the 2nd half :W
We kind of did the same thing back in 2006 but didn't sell the stick house till we found our new nest. Been here now 7 years, no regrets. Well maybe January's.
