gmc towing

I just was looking into the newer 17 2500hd. Why is that the towing capacity has gone down compared to my 13. My rating for 2500hd crewcab 4x4 says 15800 on the 2013. The newer 17 is now 13500. is it the light metals to build or what. sorry should put this in same options same engine same rear end, 4x4 standard box. and crew cab
  • Agreed it is not an apples to apples compare. Your new truck is likely far more optioned out, and/or there are different engine/transmission combos.

I just moved to a GMC 1500 (2017) from a 2004 and the towing capacity jumped from 7,000 to 9,100. It could have gone to 12,000 if I had purchased the max tow package.
  • are they the same gears, gas or diesel engines?

Be willing to bet it's the way the '17 was optioned out vs your '13. Remember, though, with FWs it's not how much you can TOW, but how much you can CARRY that should determine which truck you =should= use for a particular FW. Rule of thumb is to settle on a FW =before= buying a truck to pull it. If you already have a truck, then buy a FW that will safely fit within its specs.
