INFO on gross combined weight

Sitting here with a friend who pulls a TT and wants to switch over to a 5th wheel. He would tow with a 2010 GM 2500, short bed , extended cab, 6.0 Gas, Allison 6 speed trans. What would be the maximum combined weight he could tow????

It looks like your limiting factor is going to be your rear axle on your truck.
  • I think the most limiting factor for determining capacity is the GVWR - actual total weight of the vehicle including the passengers, fuel, other cargo and the pin weight of the trailer. I have a '04 Ram 3500, but with a GVWR of only 9,900 lbs, I was slightly over my GVWR at its heaviest weigh - in. The truck weight w/o trailer was 8,100 lbs (driver, 2 pax, dog, firewood, dutch ovens, extra beverages, etc.) + pin of 1,980 = 10,080, or 180 lbs over. In hindsight, I could have moved some of the load from the truck to the trailer, and left the daughter at home ;). As stated, that was my heaviest load, so I feel comfortable that I'm closer to the 9,900 GVWR on most typical trips. At least having weighed the set up has allowed me to better judge what and where I'm loading up with. Just my $0.02 worth - I know newer vehicles have higher GVWR ratings.

GM doesn't use the Allison behind the small block 6.0 gas engine but the 6.0L is backed by a state-of-the-art 6L90 six-speed automatic transmission.

Combined is the truck and trailer. The chart I see shows a 16000 lb for the 3.73 axle and 20000 lb for the 4.10 axle.
  • As stated in the previous post, maximum towing capacity depends on rear axle ratio. For the record, my 2008 Silverado 2500 6.0 gas has a gross cargo weight capacity of 3,195 lbs (from the door sticker). I would say that I would be good for probably 2500 lbs pin weight with trailer loaded and ready to camp. My current trailer is nowhere near that weight.
  • With gasser, depends on axle ratio. 3:73 = 9900 lbs trailer weight. With 4:10 = around 13000lbs trailer weight Keep in mind that payload rating is the deciding factor. That truck is good for about a 2,000 or less pin weight. A 10,000 (loaded) fifth wheel rv will have a 2,000 lb pin.
Best thing is weigh truck loaded for camping and with hitch, passengers, etc. Look at GVWR on sticker. Whatever is left over is what pin weight should not exceed.

What ever his payload on the truck will allow. As stated many times before you will excede payload before max trailer and max GCVWR with a 5er.

To expand on this a little bit. Look at the tire placard on the door column. It will tell you the capacity of the payload for the truck. Your pin weight, passengers and cargo can not exceed this amount safely.

according to the 2010 gmc towing guide page 15, about 10-13,000lb depending on rear gear ratio
