Locating In-Bed 7-Pin

I ordered the Curt Extension to add a 7-pin plug into the bed of the truck. It's a no-cut no-splice setup that plugs into the factory harness at the bumper plug.

My question is: Where do I put the plug in the bed? Does it matter if on the left or right side? Anybody know where the factory would have put the plug on a 2015 Ram if it came with the 5th wheel prep?

Yup! Best location by far. I've had plugs ahead of the hitch on previous trucks and it's a PITA compared to this location.

Now that said, you must be sure that if you carry anything in the bed behind the hitch that it doesn't interfere with your cord in this location. I carry propane tanks and water jugs, but ensure that the propane tanks are in milk crates and bungeed in the back corners of the bed which prevents anything from being able to move and contacting the trailer plug. In any case, I'm sure you'll figure it out!

Please keep us posted as to how you make out.

FYI For my cabover I installed it in FRONT of the wheel well and use it there for my fifth wheel. So if you think you might end up in a cabover camper in the future that might be the place to put it.

My truck came from the factory with a wiring harness tucked up between the cab and box. I put a 6 pin in ahead of the wheelwell when I had a truck camper when I bought the 5th wheel I added a 7 pin next to it

Mines home made and my truck is old but I chose driver's side and just infront of the fender well about half way up.

My first fifth-wheel, the dealer installed the 7-pin plug on the driver's side, on the fender well. It worked great for me.

This

I've had it on the driver's side just behind the cab and now driver's side just inside the tailgate. I like this location so much better.

On my 2017 and now 2022 ram I have it on the driver side about a foot to 18 inches or so in from the tailgate. On the 17 it was just above the centerline in height. On my 22 there is a 120 volt plug in the bed in that area so I just put it next to it. It does sit a bit higher than the 17 but I just put it right inline with that plug and to the rear of it.

Here you can't go wrong as this is mine in my 2015 RAM same as yours. Nice indented area.

Pics not loading right now I will post later.

To most it makes more sense to put it on the drivers side. After you back under the trailer and hook up you get out of the truck and walk back to hook up the trailer plug and the breakaway cable. You are already on that side of the truck. Why walk around the truck to hook it up?
