Locking bar hard to move on Brophy hitch

I'm having a hard time hitching and unhitching my 5ver. The locking bar seems to be sticking. I cannot pull it out by hand. I, actually, have had to resort to hitting the handle w/ a 5 lb. sledge numerous times to get the bar to come out with no pressure from the pin on it. It is also hard to get it back in.????
Help please???
  • I ended up getting the PRO Series 16 K. I hope it works well.
  • Try backing into the pin to release the load off of the lock. If the truck rolls forward or the trailer backwards against the lock, it will be difficult if not impossible to open the hitch.

No it doesn't. It is bound somehow. It is in the open and unlocked position with nothing as I can see keeping from closing.
    The bar is 1/2"thick x 2 1/2" wide.

Time for either a rebuild old, or better yet a new hitch.

I think you are right. I am going shopping tomorrow.

If it is only when hitched, try putting the truck in neutral and releasing the brake. Frequently, mine is just in a bind and will release after I take the strain off.

have you tryed closing and opening it without using the pin just a block of wood or bar.

I'm not sure what you mean??

  • Yep, I took another look at it. I am wondering if it is bent. The spring is cocked, but the locking bar is not even touching the trigger that keeps it from slamming closed behind the king pin.
