Lug nuts

What is the proper torque for lugs nuts? They are 6 lug aluminum wheels. Thanks.
  • Wheel diameter has nothing to do with torque requirements - stud size is determining factor:

    7/16" studs 80 ft-lbs
    1/2" studs 100 ft-lbs
    9/16" studs 140 ft-lbs
    5/8" studs 175 ft-lbs
    10mm studs 50 ft-lbs
    12mm studs 100 ft-lbs
    14mm studs 120 ft-lbs

Exception to the above would be motorhomes with 5/8 studs using double cap lug nuts = 450 ft-lbs

Use an alternating cross pattern to tighten
    4 lug wheel - cross
    5 lug wheel - star
    6 lug wheel - star
8 lug wheel - double cross

Re-torquing after 50-100 miles is really only required when new compoents are installed - new wheels, new lug nuts or new studs. Primarily new wheels to ensure proper lug nut seating on the wheels.
  • I was told 90 (15" alum wheels) rom the dealer for my Raptor and that's what ive been using since 2006.
  • Don't forget to stop in 50-100 miles and check them!!!! Mine have never been loose, but good reason for a "break":)))
  • It is a three stage process to properly torque the lug nuts.
Wheel Size Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3
    12-13" 20-25 35-40 50-75
    14,15&16" 20-25 50-60 90-120
remember the sequence is also important.
If you need more info, check the Dexter site, there is a complete table of the torques and sequence for tightening all the various sizes of wheels, etc.
