Most phone GPS do not work outside of cellular tower range.
Wrong. All phones GPS work outside cell range just like a handheld GPS. The problem is that a phone doesn't have a map database unless you are in cell range or you upload maps to the phone. There are a few companies that provide map services for cell phones, Delorme Earthmate and Backcountry Navigator to name two. More and more people are going this route as its cheaper then purchasing a GPS, the viewing screen is bigger with the phone or tablet, and the map layers are easily customized. Biggest con of using this system is one has to plan ahead and download the maps.
