New to 5th wheels - hitch Qs

Ive got a 2014 Dodge Ram 3500 Mega Cab pulling a 2016 Montana 5er. I believe my bed is 6’4” - do i need a slider hitch? Also - can get a few recommendations on hitches.

The company only sells their own hitch and Ive forgot the name of their hitch. Id just like what works and isnt too complicated to operate. Obviously, safer is better. The trailer is probably 9k empty and 35ft.

Just noticed you are in Alaska. Aren't many things a bit more expensive there?

But still- $2k for an installed slider hitch? Yikes.

No way I would pay that for a Curt hitch. No way at all.

That’s more inline with what I would expect to pay for a B&W Turnover Ball gooseneck and a B&W Companion fifth wheel hitch. And you would have a much better hitch. (Just look at pics of the jaws between the two hitches...Curt and B&W)

(Yep, Cummins....I’m agreeing with you)

There is nothing wrong with above bed fifth wheel rails. I would go with a B&W 18k Patriot fifth wheel hitch though.

Also, there are tons of options so that you have a flat bed with no rails above the bed.

That’s what I would choose if I were in your shoes. A B&W Turnover Ball under bed gooseneck and a B&W Companion...if money were no issue.

Thanks!

I would look at them and ask. How badly do you want to sell this trailer?

For your Ram 3500 no pucks, so likely using rails, I would go with the B&W Patriot 18K hitch. It is a safe, very user friendly hitch, that can be purchased at E-trailer for about $675 free shipping. Most any truck trailer shop will do the install for $250-300.

Go to E-trailer, watch their video of this hitch. It is top quality! As you will see, it is easily adjusted up/down, and ahead back, which will help with the 6.4 bed.

We just bought and brought home our first 5th wheel. At the end of the negotiations I said throw in the Andersen hitch and the B&W hide a ball and you have a deal. They said there was no way that they could do that. We got up and walked out. We weren't 1/2 way home and the phone rang with them telling us to come back. Honestly, I would have settled with them splitting it with me.

With a little care you almost certainly can get by without a slider. However, that “almost” can get really expensive! It’s worth the price even if you never need it.

I have used short box trucks without a slider for years and have not yet had a problem.... You have to be mindful of your turning angle. I would not waste my money on a manual slider.... Either get a standard hitch or go full auto slide. I use a B&W and I'm very happy with it.
