New to This

OK, first post on here as have been lurking for the past couple months, and learning quite a bit from everyone’s posts, but also learning should have started researching long ago. This brings me to my dilemma and question for everyone.
Last year the wife and I starting discussing what truck we wanted as we were thinking of getting a toy hauler well shortly after that my vehicle starting having issues and decided on purchasing a truck that I at the time thought would be more than enough because only need to know what the truck can tow right? learned my lesson there, purchased a 2016 RAM 2500 which filled my need of being able to tow up to 17K as we had looked at a couple RV’s and non were over 16k so figured we were good. Well now that I am really starting to look into what I can tow safety and from what have read on this site none of the RV’s (5th-Wheels) that I had been eyeing would be safe to tow due to being well over 2K hitch weight. So if you are looking for an RV and please correct if I am incorrect but I would suggest looking at what the hitch weight of the trailer is as well as the total fully loaded weight of the trailer you are looking at prior to buying a truck, and spec the truck to what is more than capable of towing your trailer. Don’t make the same mistake I did.
Now to my question since obviously I am not getting another truck and I am stuck with the following:
2016 Laramie Ram 2500 Turbo Diesel
4 door short bed 4x4 SRW
GVWR:10K
Payload:1,959
GCWR:23,300
Max Trailer weight:17,200
GAWR: Front 5,750, Rear 6,000

We are looking at the following travel trailer toy hauler.
2017 Jayco Octane T32H
Hitch:1,275
GVWR:13K
UVW:9,600
CCC:3,400
Length:37.11”
Will have an 800Lb Harley in the garage, most of the time.

Can I safely pull this trailer or am I again missing something that limits me in towing this trailer, please be honest as already made probably biggest mistake by getting the truck I have, do not want to that with the trailer. I understand that the engine will pull just about anything but would like to be safe in this new adventure, and if anyone knows of a 5th Wheel Toy hauler that I can tow safely please let me know. Thanks in advance.
  • You want to tow 37 feet plus 4 for hitch and bumper, have tried a TT of that length and your favorite campgrounds will accept that length, go! But if you are new be sure you want to be shut out of many government campgrounds.
  • Thanks for the replies, anything we carry will be in the trailer garage not in the bed of the truck as to limit how much lose in payload. There is only the two of us so figure the minimum payload we would have after adding anything and us would be about 1700 available for the trailer, I believe the T32H meets all criteria and keeps me under all weights but have read a couple posts that state may be an issue towing something that is almost 38' any thoughts? again just want to be sure before making the purchase do not want buyers remorse.
  • Payload with TT and a WDH is not as big of an issue as axle ratings/tire ratings and you will be under on those.

    IMHO.......go weigh truck 'camp ready'
Then subtract that weight from your trucks GVWR (10K)---equals weight you can add before reaching GVWR
Subtract axle weights from GAWR....room to add how much weight

    DO the math...

    Hello new toyhauler! :B

    Where is FIRST trip?
  • How much weight (passengers, gear in bed) do you plan on carrying in the truck? You may be pushing the payload limits but should be well under the axle and tire ratings.
  • Welcome, dkeller! Sorry for your issues but you'll find a good RV that your TV can handle. At least you will be in the front pew at the "church of buy or select your TT or 5ver first."
  • Trucks GVWR and subtract your scalex ready to travel weight. That leave you with ????
OK, now a TT with a 10,000 GVWR fully loaded will only drop approx 12% or 1200 pounds onto your truck. Do you have that much capacity?
