Open Range & Kayak

I seem to remember seeing a photo on Open Range's website of an Open Range fifth wheel with a kayak in the basement. Does anyone recall this photo and which model it is? Is it possible to put a kayak in the basement of any fifth wheel?

One other thing... The basement was in the rear end of the unit.

  • We got the Hobi inflatable kayak that folds up into a large suitcase
  • The picture shows a 10' kayak. If you're a whitewater kayaker, that's ample storage; but if you want to explore a big river, lake or the ocean - a 10' boat is miserable to paddle. A good inflatable (like Hobie - or I have a Sea Eagle Fast Track) or a modular hardshell like the Point 65N boats would be preferable
  • Thanks everyone. We already own the kayak: a Hobie Pro Angler 12. I ended up calling Open Range and they told me that it is, indeed a 12' kayak in that picture.

    Hmmm... Something to think about.
  • My Hobie Outback rides inside our Cardinal 29LX with opposing slides. It is the last item loaded and the first thing out. I built a cart that will carry the kayak on its side or on its bottom. Makes it easy load without wrestling it and the yak rides on the cart in the 5er.

  • Just saw this at the Ft. Worth RV show. The model you are looking for is the Open Range RF346FLR fifth wheel with the Living Room up front in the nose, the Bedroom is then at the back. They've then significantly enhanced the storage space beneath the bed.

It has space for 2 12ft or 14ft kayaks and a generator and such. In the picture they have bicycles in the storage with a shorter kayak. The sales guy pointed out that you can put a 14ft kayak in there but you lose the bicycle space because the kayak nose has to extend to the back wall. This is exactly what I wanted to be able to carry my 12ft PortaBote and 6hp outboard motor.

This is in their Roamer line and it is not light. Note these stats:

    New Model: RF346FLR
    UVW 10,590
    Dry Hitch Wt. 2,490
    Dry Axle Wt. 8,100

This is the best usage of space I've ever seen. Pictures below are hi-res and you may need to go full screen to see them all.

    346FLR.
