Pullrite Superglide Hitch Problem?

So I invested in a brand new Pullrite Superglide hitch to go with my new Cougar 327RWS Fifth Wheel...installed at Camping World.

I am having a lot of trouble getting it to lock on when hooking up. U hooking is easy. Here is what I have tried thus far...

Made sure I am exactly straight when hitching up....

Lower the Fifth to ride up the hitch...

When I get it to finally lock it first makes a quiet thump which several folks have thought I was locked in...but I wasn't. It takes a second loud thump to fully lock in. Problem is half the time it won't lock in at all and I have to pull up and try again. Thoughts ?

When I got my PullRite slider, the dealer welded the adapter plate to my pin box. A dribble of weld was holding the hitch too high. A die grinder quickly fixed things.

I've only hitched & unhitch twice so far (so what do I know). First time towed from dealer. The second time I hitched up (practice hookup) I backed within bout 3-4 inches of the pin and made the height adjustments (right at the base of the hitch plate so it tilts the hitch plate) and slide the hitch under the capture plate with just enough force to lock it. Worked like a charm. Gonna practice several more times before our first trip.

Not running a SG hitch, but do have a pullright. If the trailer is not about 1/2" low when hooking it will not latch for me. This is with a properly lubed hitch and gear setup. Any lower and its too rough on the truck and trailer, any higher and it wont grab which is nice since it seems to avoid high hitching even on a standard 5th wheel hitch.

Mine likes to be a little low, but not too much. There's a spot where it hits something resulting on a solid sounding thump. If I hear that I know I have to pull up and change the height of the 5ver, usually I move it down an inch or so and I'm fine. I have yet to understand what is happening to cause the thump - but once I hear it I know that I need to adjust the height a bit.

Alright...I may have overstated the hardness of the hit. But you cannot be too timid when backing in. Not hard enough to cause damage. But hard enough to get a good release of the jaw.

Another thought might be to remove the hitch plate and turn it upside down on a bench. Then lube up the pivot points well. Just be careful not to release the jaw by hand. It can catch ( and really hurt) fingers. But actuating the jaws after greasing well might loosen things up a bit for you.

After I towed with mine when I had one it seem to loosen up just a little and hitched just fine after that. They are very tight when new.Good luck. My B&W Companion is the easiest hitch I have ever owned to hitch and unhitch if you should ever change.

I was told to always ride up the hitch. I aim for half way up the slope and never have had a problem.

I completely disagree. I take it easy and it works everytime. Trick is finding the right height between pin box and hitch. Some need to ride up others need to be just level. Once you know what yours is you will have it in the bag.

Another *emphatic* disagree! (along with "mileshuff')

No need to be aggressive!

Been doing this for years with SG.
(From "day one" - never had a 5th or a SG before)
You should either be exactly level - or (best) "ride up" the hitch a bit. Back in slowly until latch slams shut.
*VERY* audible latching sound!

Suggest you have a discussion with PullRite Tech line.

Maybe it's operator error -or- maybe something isn't right...:h

I never have to back in hard at all. No problems hitching. Backing in hard maybe hard on the 5'ers front lifts perhaps. If you have to slam it then something is wrong!

Mine will do this if I do not have the capture plate low enough to ride up on the hitch. I make sure the plate rides up on the hitch

I used a Superglide for about 11 years without any problems. Contrary to others experiences I always had to make sure to have a fair amount of weight on the hitch as I backed underneath it. Never had an issue hooking up in all those years if I let the trailer ride up the hitch.
