re-direct generator exhaust

Hi,

I managed to put a Yamaha EF2400 generator into my Keystone Cougar's front compartment. It would be too difficult to take out for use, so I am going to leave it in there. My question is, has anyone made a pipe to extend the exhaust tip to point out of the compartment? If so, what did you use?

Thanks.

You will still need to lift it out and check/change oil. No way to open the compartment where oil check is with it in the storage bay. I would not do this with a bay that wasn't specifically designed to hold a generator. Hard to get proper air flow and the risks outweigh the benefits.
Good luck

Notwithstanding where the exhaust goes, you might look at schedule 80 plastic pipe available in the electrical section at the big box stores, Lowes, etc. You would initially think it plain silly to use plastic pipe for exhaust, but the schedule 80 stuff just doesn't melt, and it's even difficult to bend after you've torched it with a propane torch! Very tough stuff. I used it for an exhaust pipe for my Honda 2000 that I had installed in a box on the back of my previous fifth wheel. Worked great!! And the price is right.

I carry my 3000watt gen in my front compartment too but I take it out and lock it to my landing gear to run it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

The generator will need good airflow or it will overheat and cut off.
There were several Class As and Cs a couple of years ago that had that problem.

Most accessory places either have or can order and extension pipe that will
go up and over your roof. They are advertised for Motor Homes and are removable for transport.

Having your generator's exhaust pipe extended outside the body-shell and attaching one of these takes the exhaust way away.

A web search show several companies selling longer exhaust pipes of various lengths and diameters.

Is an example of welding an extension to the muffler to be able to route the exhaust outside.

This is similar to what I did except I used a 3/4"threaded pipe fitting. I did this to run the exhaust out of a locking metal box I had mounted on the rear of my previous trailer. Now I use the threaded fitting to connect it to a small car muffler that lays on the ground if we are near other campers.

WAY WORSE than "Not a good idea!...Terrible idea!..:S

Put the gen in the back of your truck bed or secured on the ground, and skip your death wish..:C

BTW - my Yam 2400i runs by 15K BTU AC just fine, struggles to get the 13.5 off the starter windings (needs an easy start capacitor).

And it sure isn't (never will be) in the generator compt...:R

This issue has also happened when too many rigs were parked close together. People have died from gen exhaust from other rigs. They sell a removable vertical extension. I believe it genturi or something like that. It doesn't attach tightly to the generator exhaust pipe. It's larger than the gen pipe so air/draft effect helps moves the gasses without causing back pressure.

On a boondocker about 7-8 years ago, I fired up a small generator to charge my batteries on the last afternoon. It was on the end of my 25' 30a cord at full extension. Yes, windows were open, but it set off the detectors inside in about 5 minutes. I did =not= have a CO detector, but it nailed the LP detector! Crazy... Shut it down and let things air out for about an hour, closed all the windows and tried again. I got about 20 minutes with the FW closed up tight before it went off again. Ended up having to plug my truck in and run it for a couple hours. NOT what I was wanting to do, for sure.

Like others...I'm not sure this is a good idea unless you make sure the compartment is airtight.

For my Onan I use flexible metal conduit to run the exhaust away from the 5th wheel. I carried 20 feet of conduit which can be rolled up and stored in the back of truck or storage compartment.

I chose a size of conduit that would slide onto the existing exhaust pipe and used a set screw to hold it in place. Then I could roll out the conduit to get the exhaust well away from the 5th wheel.

Personally I would not do it. CO is a silent killer, and even with a CO detector it may malfunction. Even installed units have instructions about how to mount in enclosed locations for this reason. Portable units most likely have warnings about using them in enclosed locations. I would not put my family in a situation that might cost them their life. If it is to heavy for you to move alone, you might want to get someone to help you when needed. Remember Murphy's Law, if something can go wrong it can and will go wrong. JMO

I would not do it either. I have a build in Onan and the fumes come into the bedroom (still working on an exhaust extension).

I was thinking the same thing at one time,, and totally voted against it,,, we carry ours in the back of the truck and park away from the 5er.. we once went to a campout where a lot of people get there early and boondock for the night,, well one couple used a small portable generator, set it behind their camper fired it up and went to bed,, the fumes must have gone in the rear window,, they never came out the next morning,,, Just saying, I always keep the portable generator away from the camper,,, its cable locked in the truck bed...
