Rig destroyed today!

Ginnie and I have been on the road since mid June. This morning I developed a sudden fuel leak in my 2013 F350. It ignited before I could get stopped. Ginnie, our doggie and I bailed out of the truck and the cab was quickly engulfed in flames.

The fire spread to our 2014 Grand Design Reflection fifth wheel. The truck, FW, and all of our personal possessions were destroyed. We were able to buy some clothes tonight and we'll drive the 1800 miles to home in a rental car. When I get home, I'll post some pictures.

How awful and so very scary! As so many others have expressed, we are so glad you guys are OK. We have a new Ford 350 diesel, our first Ford, so this got our attention. Please keep us posted as to anything that you learn about this terrible mishap.

Good god, how terrifying. Thank goodness you and your family made it out OK.

Like the others I hope that your insurance carrier treats you right. You may want to start writing a list of contents and add to it as items enter your mind. Like most of us I'm sure you had a ton of items in both the truck and trailer that are now destroyed and it will be difficult to remember them all.

Please keep us posted and take care.

When we lost a tv and trailer, our insurer gave us an inventory sheet and told us to keep it with us for a couple of weeks or more, because he said "you'll wake up in the middle of the night and remember stuff you had in the trailer".

So sorry to read and see this. Glad everyone is safe. 5er and truck can be replaced fairly easily, people of course can't. I can some what feel your pain as my wife and I experienced a house fire several years ago. Hope your insurance takes good care of you. Safe travels on the rest of your journey home.

We are all thankful to hear that you, Ginny and your doggie are safe and on your way home. So sorry to hear you lost your beautiful rig and all of your possessions. What a terrifying experience for you all. Thoughts and prayers are with you as you recover from this loss and work to remember what you lost so that you can replace your beautiful rig.

Man im so glad you guys are ok!!!

The firefighter in me notices that it appears the responding FD did a good job with what they had to save any of the RV at all. Lord knows those things burn like matches and to see 3/4 of it left looks like they put a decent stop on it.

Were you guys able to salvage anything from the RV? I'm certain there is a ton of smoke damage inside though. But as already stated....you guys are safe, and that's the most important possession!

Wow that's scary. Luckily you got the important stuff out of the truck safely.

What caused the fuel leak and fire? Seems weird that it would do that in a pretty new truck like that.

Wow! So sad for your misfortune :(. Glad you and your family were not hurt!

I can relate some to your situation. I know the feeling of sitting on the side of the highway, watching your truck burn down, and not being able to do anything about it. Such a helpless and hopeless feeling.

I lost my F350 to a fire last summer, caught fire while driving on the highway. Fortunately, I only lost the truck (I was pulling a boat at the time). Fire department got there in time to save most everything rearward of the cab, and the boat. Truck was a total loss. It was a diesel. The fire did not start in the fuel system, it was electrical. Mine was a much older truck, '97, so likely nothing related to what caused your fire.

I hope you have a good insurance carrier. I have State Farm. They took care of everything and paid me off quite handsomely. I'm very happy with State Farm.

Like others have said, make a list of everything you were carrying, with approximate costs for each item. The costs really add up quick (especially with a trailer you were living in, I would imagine).

Hi Jim,

If okay with you, I can likely lift the photo from our other conversation and post here. Will only do so with your permission.

Tom

That would be great! Thanks

Consider it done. A rather chilling sight. Safe travels home Jim.
