rust on worm gears track on slide outs

I have 2009 fifth wheel and have noticed that i have alot of rust on teeth of gear and drive gear under our slide outs. What can be done to help and prolong life of these components?

Sorry for the hijack, but how do you lube the inner legs?

Mine will not slide down on their own unless I extend the outers nearly all the way down!! I've always figured there had to be a way to lube this, but never found it.

Do you simply extend them and spray the outside of the inner leg?

I spray mine with Slip Plate brand graphite spray. Goes on and drys like paint. Reduces friction, noise and rust.

The most tenacious stuff for this type of application is Dry Moly Lube (molybdenum disulfide)in a spray can. Its a bit expensive ($15 for 11 oz)but the stuff is tough (outlasts graphite easily), is waterproof, doesnt come off, (don't get it on you) and is heat resistant. It will also resist abrasion and prevent future rusting. It is widely used in gunsmithing to re-blue weapons and also to lubricate wood stoves.

You can get "slide out lube" at RV stores. It's a dry film lube that works great and doesn't attract dust. I would imagine you can use any dry film lube you find at someplace like Orially's.
I use it several times a year and especially after a dusty trip. I saturate it enough that it rinses dust and dirt off.

If you are talking about the hydraulic type slide outs they each have two gear packs underneath that do require cleaning and proper lubrication to promote long life and good working order

Use PB penetrant to clean off the rust that builds up on the gear pack teeth and bar.. Clean as best as possible, dry off the penetrant and then use PB graphite dry lubricant spray, usually fray in color to,libricate the teeth and rack assemblies...WD 40 is really not the right stuff to use for these as it gathers dirt and dust and has no staying power like the dry graphite spray does..

There is also a procedure on Lipperts web site that shows you how to service the gear packs if they develope a squeal or your slides are sluggish...

I do both of these at the beginning of each season

x2. BUT, I would not use WD-40. It's not really a good lubricant.

I would use PB Blaster or a rust preventative spray.
