Slide hitch or not

I have a chance on getting an 08 F350 5.4L short bedvtruck.
The motor would be all right since I onlt pull the 5th wheel maybe 30 miles one way to the campground, maybe 6 times a season.
My oroblem is if I would need a slider for the short bed, or can I just usevthe standard non sliding hitch?
  • If the 5er has an extended pin box and rounded corners it's possible, just be REALLY careful on sharp turns. My buddy had an '05 Chevy short bed with a PullRite sliding hitch and never once used the slider. He moved up to a '10 GMC short bed that had a B&W slider. On his first trip out he was making a sharp turn in a parking lot and BAM, busted out the back glass. In the course of normal driving there was no issue at all, but that really tight turn created the situation where he needed (and should have used) his slider.
  • Depends on the trailer you are going to pull. If the front corners are squared-off, I would say "yes". If the corners are rounded and swept back, I would say "probably not".
  • I went to a 6.5 bed in 99, while owning a square cornered FW. Used caution/awareness, no issue. Been towing FWs ever since with shorter bed trucks. Current FW, with rounded corners, mostly a non issue, but like any trailer, you still need to be aware.

  • Good friend knocked out his back window on a short bed Chevy and an older 5er with squared front corners on a tight back in turn. Bought a new 5er with contoured corners and better turn radius and no more problem. Of course he was also far more careful.
