Slide Out help needed on Grand Junction

Hello all.
My wife and I just purchased a 2007 Grand Junction 34TRG with three slides, but only two of them are functioning. Both the bedroom and living room slides work like a champ, but the large kitchen slide doesn’t want to cooperate.

When I press the extend button, I hear a clunk..clunk..clunk sound, and can feel an accompanying vibration in the floor. If I press the retract button, it makes a deeper CLUNK…CLUNK…ClUNK sound with a similar vibration on the floor.

The previous owner stated that he had this slide motor replaced about a year ago, and hasn't had any problems with it since.

I crawled under the camper and found an access panel that had been cut in the underbelly. Removing this panel, I can see the motor for the slide. The motor has a sticker on it with the previous owner’s name, so that tells me the motor was in fact replaced.

I had my wife press the extend button while I connected a volt-meter to the motor, and confirmed that the motor is getting 12V.

We also had two people inside the camper try to push out the slideout while the “extend” button was pushed thinking that it may just be hung up, but it didn’t budge.

This is our first camper, so any and all input is welcome!
Thanks!

Also, does anyone know how to manually get this slide out?
  • My first take is that the shear pin between the motor and the drive shaft has broken. This would be a soft steel bolt in a collar of some sort between the output shaft on the motor and the drive shaft. It's =designed= to shear if something hangs up so, if that is the case, don't replace it with a grade 8 or you'll =really= FUBAR something. :-) Check with Grand Junction and see what they recommend, though I'd suspect that a standard grade 5 bolt is what was used, though it wouldn't surprise me if it was a roll pin.

  • If the coupling/shear pin is OK, check the slideout motor/gear reduction drive (assuming it's an electric, not a hydraulic, slideout). Is the output shaft turning when the motor is getting power? If not, it could be that you have some gear teeth sheared off in the gear reduction unit.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

  • Do you have a manual override, a hand crank, to move the slide out in or out? If the manual crank won't work then it is a good bet that some of the teeth are sheered off. If the manual crank works then check the shear pin at the motor.
  • Is the shear pin visible, or is it housed inside the gearbox of the motor?

I looked, but wasn't able to locate the manual fitting. Any other Grand Junction owners out there know where to find it?

Also, I read in another post that there is a "brake" designed into some of these motors to prevent the slid outs from moving during transport. The post suggested that you disconnect the power to the motor to release this brake, and then you could push / pull the slide as needed. Any thoughts on this?
  • My 2008 Grand Junction 37QSB has a hole with a rubber grommet on each of the two rear living room slides:

into which a crank handle long enough to reach the "T" (that vertical aluminum colored looking thing in the background) is inserted and placed over the "T":

Then start cranking. The largest kitchen slide and the smallest bedroom slide don't have either the hole or the "T".

    Hope this helps.
