U Bolt conundrum

OK I'm replacing a broken spring on our 5ver. I got the new spring on but the U-Bolts are sprung too wide to fit in the holes of the plate that runs under the axle. Is there some sort of trick to this, the brand new U-Bolts are the same way. Do you have to compress the U-Bolt. Doesn't seem like there is much room to get a C Clamp under there.
  • I got the all the parts directly from Dexter. So it's kind of weird. I wasn't planing on taking off both wheels (on the same side) but when the spring broke it apparently caused the other wheel's shackles to flip so they were pointed up instead of down with the tension of the spring holding it up. So I had to pull that spring off too to get the shackles back down. That's why I was thinking of re-using those u-bolts on the unbroken spring.
  • Where did you get the new U-Bolts? When I replaced my axles, the U-Bolts were supplied by Dexter and fit perfectly. (You should not reuse old U-Bolts anyway.)

One way to reduce the pitch on U-Bolts is to thread a nut onto the end of each leg so you don't bugger up the threads; then clamp the bolt upright across the faces of the nuts in a bench vice, bolt vertical and directly above the vice screw. Tighten the vice to pull the bolt ends toward each other.

You have to overbend it because it will spring back. It is a trial and check process. You may have to use a pipe extender on the vice handle (and you DO need a machine shop size vice).

Be carefull!!! There is a lot of potential energy in that compressed "U".

Others over on the Titanium Forum may have run into this, but I don't remember reading about it.
