Campground, guy is pulling a 30 ft 5er with a 3500. I mentioned we have a 30' 5er on order and he asks me if I'm going to pull it with my F150. No, I'm getting an F350. He then proceeds to tell me the F150 will handle the wt without any issue? When I challenged him with payload and 25% pin wt, he informed me the pin wt on his is only 750 lbs. I didn't think to ask how he knew that.

Seems like rv folks like to lump a 1/2 ton truck in one load and pulling capability.
Take the F150HD. Ford markets the F150 with three different frame sizes with 6xxx lb on up to 8200 GVWR and 3200 lbs up to 4800 rawr....and of course a whole fleet of different size engines that a couple can out muscle some engines used in some F250 trucks.
No doubt a F150HD 8200-7850 GVWR and 4800 rawr with the 3.5 EB engine can safely tow some 30' 5ers.

And lets not forget GMs '00-'06 1500HD which lots are still in use around farms/ranches/construction work places. These trucks come with a 8600 gvwr/6000 rawr 6.0 engines with 11k-12k lb tow ratings and 3000-3200 lb actual real world in the bed payloads.

Lots of replies from those that bought the wrong size 1/2 ton truck then post a 1/2 ton truck can't safely tow a 5th wheel trailer.

350 lb pin weight on a 30' 5er ?? IMO some one is mistaking one or both numbers.
Now having said its possible to load a 30' 5er with enough of Lucy's rock collection and place it just behind the trailers axles and get any hitch weight needed but its gonna' be a handful running down the road in a straight line.

Winter sun now I think you are getting your weight right out of thin air. The weight rating has got everything to do with it, and I donโ€™t know where you are getting the info on broken frames on F350. Maybe they were way overloaded and probably fitted with airbags to the chassis in a place where no load was meant to be added.

By against max, if within rating, should tow normal. As in most cases, a DRW may make a better TV, but not always the best choice, if not needed.

What FW and TV are you considering?

Since we are on the subject again, my first pull in the RV world was with a Chevy 1/2 ton and a half ton towable 5er. Now when I ran it over the scales, ready to camp, I was 80 pounds under max. I come from the big truck world. Any twin screw tractor on the lot, can gross 80,000 with a trailer and pull, stop, drive just fine. Traveling from NJ to Yellowstone was not a fun trip, and I replaced the half ton with a 3/4 ton and I have been happy since.

Now for a question I have asked before, based on the truck's SAE J2807 towing rating, how do trucks tow right against max????

I am getting ready to swap my 2012, time to get serious.

If he is correct at 750# pin... I agree he is generally good to go. Not sure why he had a 3500 :R

The frame on the 1500 will not be strong enough regardless of the payload capacity. It was a problem on the F-350 trucks and lots of picture on the web of ones with the frames broken apart. GM beefed up their 2500/3500 truck frames in 2011 and Ram in 2014 and Ford in 2016 so they could handle greater tow loads.

The tires on a 1500 class truck also have a much lower load capacity which is also going to limit the payload. Worse are the 1500 class trucks with coil springs as with the Ram 1500 pickups.

Well that is very light for a 30โ€™ 5er. Our 32โ€™ 5er pin is 2,700#. Must tow like ****! It would chuck like crazy with that light of pin.

I thinks he is pulling number from the air, my 35ft has a dry pin weight of 2,130lbs. Then I added a washer/dryer, & Tempur Pedic mattress in the nose, plus lots of other stuff for long term travel.
