What are most common greenhorn mistakes?

I have the 6 point level system and I love it. I will say just to make sure BOTH the front legs are down before pulling out from your hitch.

When you are standing there putting the legs down it is very easy to forget there is a leg on the other side that needs to go down too.

Don't ask how my son and I know. lol

Best advise is to create a check-list of "do's" for setting up camp and breaking camp until it becomes first nature. Even then, things can happen. We all do a pretty good job of setting up and taking down, but even the best of us have on occasion forgotten something. Looking back is now funny. At the time was embarrassing. No damage, or minimal damage resulted, but IT could have been much worse.

Once with our PUP I forgot to throw the catch on the hitch. Started moving, first bump, the trailer bounced off the hitch ... oops! Thank goodness we were only a few feet from our campsite and still at the campground. Embarrassing? Yes! Any damage? Only my pride.

Then once with the TT, forgot to unplug shore power from the house. Got down the road about a 1/4 mile with 35 feet of cord dangling behind the camper. Any damage? No. Dangerous? Yes. Embarrassed? Exceedingly!

It happens to everyone. You'll misjudge and back into a tree, back into a water spiggot or clip the electric plug pole, or misjudge and get a wheel in the grass and get stuck in mud. There's no fool-proof, bullet proof list. Things DO happen. You do your best, and always check and double check when setting up and taking down.

Advise: Never park anywhere (even flat ground) without chocking your trailer tires ... no matter what kind of trailer it is.

Advise: When leaving a campsite ... walk twice all the way around your rig, and check everything.

I would recommend not being in a hurry when leaving. After everybody's loaded and ready to go, step back and take a slow walk all the way around your rig. Look up top too and make sure every things closed up.

Here's one good tip fer' ya',,when you hook your fiver to your truck raise your front landing gear 1" off the ground then go into the truck,apply your trailer brakes and slowly pull ahead to make sure the hitch is locked,i do this every time and my truck bed and fiver have never been in contact!!!

Not a Greenhorn mistake but worse than that because I knew better. Before I disconnected the fiver from the TV I got distracted by the dogs barking. Did not chock the wheels and went to level the fiver Yes verrrrrry stuuuuuupid and costly. But I did new landing gear and a chewing out from the dw justly deserved. Now think twice act once.

not Greenhorn mistakes....we all forget. Mostly, common sense.

- check you spare tire pressure.
- nothing in the bed that can get airborne...wind currents
are altered by the fiver nose.
- don't leave your water pressure regulator or surge protection
to the next camper.
- tire chocks... first thing down, last thing up.
- every time... 5ver and combo walk thru and around before you depart...
every time.... with significant other.
- remember the lumber you used to level the rig on arrival.
- dump water in the fire pit.... no matter how long since you used
it.
- turn signals and brake lights... every time.
- investigate clunks, thumps, whaps, etc.,.... it wont get better.
- check your fuel gauge.
- have your dump station gear organized.... helps speed the line.
- out where I live... always take extra drinking water.
- leave extra time to accomplish the lift off.

Forgot to batten the hatch on the outdoor kitchen. Flew open on the first sharp bend but luckily guy behind signaled something was wrong.
Left antenna up
Forgot to fold up the steps
Forgot to do brake light check (cop reminded me)
Forgot to secure the wine/shot glass cupboard (yep, that was a disaster)
Pulled into a gas station unknowingly had left propane tanks open.
When backing up at angle to hitch up be mindful of the tailgate (yep, put a hole in fiberglass)
Depending on campground before pulling out be aware of any low lying tree branches
What MPI_Mallard mentioned above I learned to do every time. Almost had a disaster the first time.

Before we leave a site my wife goes around the back of the RV to check the brake and turn signals BECAUSE I can't tell you how many times I have forgotten to connect the power cable from the RV to the tow vehicle. There just seems to be lots of things to do UPFRONT what with connecting the RV, collecting all of the wood blocks, etc that I occasionally forget; after 9 seasons! Could be Mad Cow...
