That's not technically correct. All vehicle manuals state that GAWR or GVWR must not be exceeded. Here is a direct quote from Ford's manual:
“Addition of trailer tongue (trailer king pin for 5th-wheel towing) load weight and weight of passengers and cargo must not cause vehicle weights to exceed rear GAWR or GVWR.”
Well yes you are correct, I am sure that is in EVERY owners manual. That said some are arbitrary numbers that are part set by engineers and marketing. Now days a model line might have 10 or more GVWR, based on options, larger springs, bigger tires, etc.
Well just a few years back they assigned only one GVWR per model, not based on load enhancing options.
That is why I can be well over GVWR, and still 600# and 640# under on the front and rear axle ratings, and not need any EXTRA stuff to tow better than level.
