Whats Your Real Weights? Truck and Trailer. The Real Deal

I don’t know if it’s been done before or not but I was thinking about keeping a running list of real truck weights by year and type, and trailer weights by brand, size and what the total combined weight is of each guys rig. I was hoping the info would be a help for guys wondering about what the real weights are for a certain type of truck and to keep track of the more popular brand 5th wheel trailers. Another thing that will come out of it will be to see just how many guys really know what they are towing and if they know what their weight capacities are.
I’m sure it will take some time to compile a list and it will grow as guys add there info but I’m hoping it will help the newer guys in the long run to be directed back over to this thread in the future.
I’ll keep the TV lists to mainly the big 3 and from ¾ ton and up and I’ll try to keep the 5ers in a group by real GVW, length, and then manufacture. Any ideas are welcome as long as it makes things easier. And only real information can be given, so no guessing allowed. Only guys that have scaled there rigs or are totally certain of the weights.
Let’s see if I can keep the format real simple to type down and that will make it simpler for guys to refer back to and to keep track of.
Here we go……

TV - 2006 Dodge Mega Cab 3500 4x4, real scaled weight with full fuel, hitch, DH-DW and misc. gear = 7,500lbs. TV GVWR is 10,200lbs
5ver – KZ New Vision TH 38ft 14,500lbs loaded GVW. GVWR is 18,000lbs
Normal running TV & TH GCW weight= 22,500lbs, TV GCWR is 23,000lbs
Real Wet Pin Weight=2,950lbs

So for example: A Montana 293RK stick says: Payload 2,080 Loaded Trailer 8,320-10,400

I take 10,400 lbs for the tailor and multiply .25 which equals, 2,600 lbs. Looks like this 5th wheel is too heavy. Right or wrong.


I towed a 32.5' Avion Platinum with my 98 RAM2500 and it was a perfect match the truck sat level and performed well. The combined weight was 20,500#. I always said that RV was the trucks limit that is why I went Dually with the larger RV.

So Look for a 5er with a gross weight rating of 12-13K.

First, go to this page and enter your truck's VIN number and you should know for sure the GCWR on the stats info page. Dodge VIN Decoder

Second, enter the weight info into the calculator at RV Tow Check.

Hmm... If your truck's GCWR is 23,000 lbs. and the GVWR is 9,900 lbs., that doesn't leave you much available payload to tow a fifth wheel. According to RV Tow Check, using those numbers, your fifth wheel tow capacity could be just 9,100 pounds.

I only have truck weights for now, my ordered Arctic Fox fifth wheel hasn't been delivered yet:

2006 Dodge 3500 Laramie 4x4, SRW, quad cab, short bed. It's equipped with a PacBrake, Vision 19.5 inch wheels, and 90 gallon in-bed transfer tank.

The truck was weighed without driver but all 125 gallons of fuel capacity topped off and the Superglide hitch mount installed. The actual hitch was not mounted, it weighs about 200 pounds.

That's not technically correct. All vehicle manuals state that GAWR or GVWR must not be exceeded. Here is a direct quote from Ford's manual:

“Addition of trailer tongue (trailer king pin for 5th-wheel towing) load weight and weight of passengers and cargo must not cause vehicle weights to exceed rear GAWR or GVWR.”


Well yes you are correct, I am sure that is in EVERY owners manual. That said some are arbitrary numbers that are part set by engineers and marketing. Now days a model line might have 10 or more GVWR, based on options, larger springs, bigger tires, etc.

Well just a few years back they assigned only one GVWR per model, not based on load enhancing options.

That is why I can be well over GVWR, and still 600# and 640# under on the front and rear axle ratings, and not need any EXTRA stuff to tow better than level.

That's not technically correct. All vehicle manuals state that GAWR or GVWR must not be exceeded. Here is a direct quote from Ford's manual:

“Addition of trailer tongue (trailer king pin for 5th-wheel towing) load weight and weight of passengers and cargo must not cause vehicle weights to exceed rear GAWR or GVWR.”

We was unable to get a per axle weight as the approach to scales was not level. So we would have gotten a bad weight. Free weight can't complain

I have a 2001 Ram 2500, CTD, and the truck has a GCVWR of 20,000# and I tow at about 19,000# to 19,500# GCVW.
That said I am well over the TV GVWR of 8,800#, but well within the Rear axle rating of 6,084#, and the front axle rating of 5,200#.

Dankenbring, what were your axle weights, that is far more important the GCVW or GVW of the TV.

Truck actual weight with ¼ tank of fuel, 6420lbs., my weight 165lbs, 6585lbs gross weight. Fifth Wheel towing Cap. 14,300lbs ,GCWR 20,500

Bighorn 3070 Dry weight 10852 lbs. GVWR 14,000, GAWR 6,000

Combined Truck and Bighorn 18,600lbs.

Sounds like a very solid Tow Vehicle... My 2006 F550 only has a 33K GCWR...


Truck was totally revamped in 2013, brand new frame, new front end, new rear end, beefed up suspension, dual cooling components,...toss in the Aisin tranny and it gave you the 385HP and 850ftlb of TQ numbers. GVWR went from 12,200# in 2012 to 14,000# in 2013...GCWR, to me, is a bit much, but that is the rated GCWR for my truck with the Aisin tranny and the 4:10 rear end....It really handles my 5er quite effortlessly....Have plenty of room to "go bigger", should I choose to...and you're right, it is a very solid TV...it's also my daily driver:)

Sounds like a very solid Tow Vehicle... My 2006 F550 only has a 33K GCWR...
