So I’m just wondering what others think about this. A camp host told me today that she does not put toilet paper in the toilet because it causes faulty sensor readings, sticks to the walls of the black tank, and can clog the drain system.She told me that she puts all of her soiled toilet paper in a plastic grocery store bag and throws it out with the trash. She claims she has never had a faulty sensor reading or clogged drain pipe since doing this. I do not buy the commercial RV black tank products, mainly because they are so expensive, rather I pour some bleach in my toilet after dumping the black tank, and that usually dissolves human waste as well as toilet paper. I have heard of people doing all sorts of things when it comes to cleaning their black tank or using toilet paper. Some will only buy the RV camping type toilet paper while others use the commercial brand black tank cleaning products.What are your opinions, if any, on this? What do you use to clean your black tank and do you use regular or RV type toilet paper? Yeah, it does sound like a bunch of crap.

Bleach is not good for the black tank. Simply use enough water. If you need to clean it, add a small amount of Dawn liquid and/or Calgon and lots of water. You should not have any issues with either tank if you follow some simple rules....Never leave your black tank valve open.Use plenty of water when you flush.Empty black tank when it's about 3/4ths full.Flush black tank after emptying.Leave a couple gallons of water in black tank at all times.Use single ply tissue.Using these few simple rules you'll never have a problem with your tank. Bleach will damage the toilet seals as well as the knife valve seals. "Saving" used toilet tissue is unsanitary and gross....just sayin.....Dennis

the thought here are to use what ever paper you use in the stick house. they only put TP in separate containers in Mexico and I for one am not ready for that. the smell and the health issue in putting human waste in the garbage is beyond my thinking. My DW was a teacher and she would tell me horror stories of the migrant kids using the rest rooms in school. they would have to teach the kids the first day how to throw TP in the toilet not the floor. the janitors would have a fit if they found it on the floor. sensors are always inaccurate, TP or not, I use a quickie flush in my TT black tank and the grey tank also. no problems with my sensors.

There are lots of things I don't put down the toilet including TP. Having an air tight container that has a bread bag inside, secured with a flip up lid is easy enough to deal with...and I don't do this because I want my sensors to work better. Many years ago (we've been RVing since 1990 in one class A or another)we had a problem at the dump station JUST ONCE that resulted in most of our black tank on the ground instead of "down the hole". It was raining (of course). Dealing with the mess and cleaning up the area would have been so much easier if there had not been all that white dissolving toilet paper clinging to the rough ground.I don't care how many say that it's so disgusting to imagine not putting that nasty TP in the toilet. (They only say that here... they don't tell me this in my own RV And they certainly are not going to be around helping me clean it up off the ground.)

Kathy, you’re the second person I’ve heard of that does this, and I don’t think it is nasty as long as it is handled properly. An air-tight container or tie-off plastic trash or grocery bag, sounds appropriate to me.Think about it; all those people who go tent camping in the boon docks and how they handle going to the toilet, using toilet paper, etc. I use the regular toilet paper which I used in my house, and it does seem like the black water tank sensors are always a bit off as “Old Guy“ said.Don’t know if that is because of toilet paper or not. But I do think that if a person uses big wads of toilet paper every time that does add up when it comes to dumping your black tank and could cause problems.Executive, thanks for the tip on not using bleach, and the simple rules which do sound like a good way to do things. WoodGlue, and others saying to use a lot of water when dumping your black tank also sound like a good idea. I used to put the city water hose through an RV widow and run it into the toilet. Leave it on for awhile to flush out the black tank, but now I have a “hydro-flush” attached to my drain opening and can shoot water up into the tank instead of putting the water hose through a window. My fifth wheel also has a hose attachment where you can flush out the black water tank.

bingo. you have hit upon the perfect solution. just put a diaper pail next to the potty, throw your cloth TP in that and wash, preferably at the camp ground's laundromat.

Costco (Kirkland) brand is about the cheapest 2/3 ply paper that will definitely break up in a toilet, and not clog the sensors.

Put a couple of squares in a cup of water and stir it with a knife. You'll be convinced.

I've traveled full-time for 8 years in a carnival (my husband for about 11 years) and everyone I know, from tiny little bumper-pulls to $500k coaches, puts their toilet paper in their trash can.

We do it simply because that's what I've always been taught and seen in practice. It's what we're used to.

Whether someone else flushes or bags, it makes no difference to me in the least. It's not my trailer. I'll continue to bag.

I do like that one person's idea to use cheapy sandwich baggies to.contain the paper, smell and all.

Yes, you bet!

2. Like many mentioned should I put a cup of detergent a cup of Clagon and 5 gallons of water?
No, never. Just be sure there is enough liquid in there by the time you want to empty.

3. If I do 2 above won't my tank be full before I use it?
Yes, so don't.

4. I can look in the tank to see its full so do I care if I have no sensor?
No, there is no need for you to have a sensor when you have a visual option.

Yuck, not in my house.

I will live with faulty sensor readings (most everyone does) and my black tank has never been clogged, not once in 10 years of freely putting Scott tissue in the tank, along with plenty of water. It's the plenty of water part that most people forget.

If you feel that TP is the bane of your black tank, then do what you feel is best.
